Prosecutions in County Durham: Prisoners

The accounts of the Treasurer of County Durham include among the disbursements the cost of prosecutions: giving when paid, attorney's name, prisoner's full name, term when prosecuted, and cost. The term of prosecution is identified by the abbreviations 1 S. for Epiphany Sessions; 2 S., Easter Sessions; 3 S., Midsummer Sessions; 4 S., Michaelmas Sessions; Ad. S., Adjourned Sessions; Sp. A., Spring Assizes; S. A., Summer Assizes; W. A., Winter Assizes. 1 January to 28 December 1844. The total cost of prosecutions for the year was £4,057 16s 7d.BROWN. Masters of Wrecked British Merchantmen
(1844-1845)
The Nautical Magazine Register of Wrecks of British Shipping for 1845 lists in tabular form the casualties in the merchant shipping fleet from the end of 1844 to the end of 1845. The tables give the vessel's name, port to which she belonged, master's name, what port she set out from, intended destination, where and when she came to grief, and whether the crew were saved or drowned. Each entry gives the name of the bankrupt (surname first, in capitals), the date (in brackets), address and trade; followed by the names and addresses of the trustees to whom the estate was delivered, and the name and address of the solicitor. Bankrupts in England and Wales

Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of bankruptcies and stages in the liquidation of the estate, payment of dividends, and discharge. The initial entry in this sequence gives the name of the bankrupt (surname first, in capitals), the date gazetted, address and trade (often with the phrase dlr. and ch., meaning dealer and chapman); the dates and times and courts of the official processes of surrender; the surname of the official commissioner (Com.); the surname of the official assignee; and the names and addresses of the solicitors; the date of the fiat; and whether on the bankrupt's own petition, or at the demand of petitioning creditors, whose names, trades and addresses are given. In subsequent entries the bankrupt is often merely referred to by name and trade. This is the index to the names of the bankrupts, from the issues from January to December 1845, which may or may not include the detailed first entry for any particular individual.BROWN. Bankrupts in England and Wales petitioning for discharge

Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of bankruptcies and stages in the liquidation of the estate, payment of dividends, and discharge. Towards the end of the process there was a Meeting for Allowance of Certificates, where the bankrupt applied for a certificate of discharge. This meeting sometimes took place many years after the bankruptcy procedure started: the details given are the year originally gazetted, name (surname first), address, and trade; and the date and time of the hearing. Boys entering Leeds Grammar School
(1845)
The admission books for Leeds Grammar School from 1820 to 1900 were edited by Edmund Wilson and published in 1906. The series of registers is almost complete for the period, there being in addition admission registers for the Lower (or Commercial) Department from 1856 to 1865, and lists of boys in the school in 1856, and in the Commercial Department in 1861. The entries are arranged by date or term of admission: a sequential number is given first, then surname, christian name, and, after a dash, father's christian name, occupation, and address; another dash, and then the age of the boy at admission, and often his year of leaving (with the abbreviation r. for 'removed' or 'left'). r.* means left without notice; (o) or S. or Stranger or Foreigner indicates a boy not on the foundation. The editor was unable to divine the meaning of the abbreviation (Q) or the asterisks prefixed to most entries in 1856 to 1860, but dutifully copies them into the text.
