England and Venice
(1643-1647)
The Master of the Rolls directed the compilation of translations of archives from northern Italy relating to English affairs. This volume, edited by Allen B. Hinds and published in 1926, is largely based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the Venetian archives, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Most of this volume consists of the letters of Secretary Agostini from London, the Advices of London forwarded from Paris, and the Esposizioni Principi; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean: Venice was struggling with the Turks for possession of Candia (Crete), and English merchants, mercenaries and ships were involved on both sides. There is even the report of a raid by Barbary pirates on the Cornish coast in which 200 women were carried off for slaves.BROWN. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Besiegers of Colchester
(1648)
The siege of Colchester was one of the most severe of the Civil War, and lasted from 14 June to 28 August 1648. Kent and Essex Royalists on their way into Norfolk and Suffolk turned aside into Colchester, hoping to get recruits there. Fairfax pursued from his headquarters in London, and when on 12 June he appeared with 5,000 men they were obliged to make hasty preparations for defence. The town was ill-fitted to stand a siege, and the 4,000 Royalist troops were most of them newly levied and ill-armed, but after a repulse on 14 June 14, Fairfax realized that a long siege was inevitable, and busied himself with raising forts to completely isolate the town. On 2 July the work of circumvallation was finished, and though meeting with fierce resistance, Fairfax gained post after post. Early in August famine added to the misery of the besieged, and the citizens began to clamour for surrender. On 19 August, Norwich, the Royalist leader, asked for terms; negotiations went on for some days, and finally on 28 August, Fairfax occupied the town. Three of the Royalist leaders were shot, and the soldiers were sent to labour in the West Indies, or to enforced military service under the Venetian Republic. The townsmen were made to pay a heavy fine.
These accounts list disbursements to workmen digging the fortifications and to artificers, soldiers and officers involved in the siege. The total sum paid was about £1,695.

Well-Affected Men of Kent
(1648)
After the capture of king Charles I by the forces of Parliament, this petition signed by over 1100 of 'the well affected in the county of Kent' was drawn up, calling on the Commons to prosecute his trial vigorously, and not to be satisfied with 'less than the blood of those persons, who have been the principall Authors' of the civil war; and also to transfer authority over all the militia in the country to 'his Excellency the Lord Fairfax'. Thomas Hearne the antiquary published a copy of the petition 'taken by no very skillfull scribe' in 1774, observing that such petitions were 'very diligently drawn up, not by the honest part, but by the very scum, of the Nation, signed generally by persons, in all respects, of an ordinary Reputation.' In this particular case, he noted, 'you'll scarce find one among them of any note or distinction.'BROWN. Cost: £6.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Bury St Edmunds area testators and legatees
(1370-1650)
A number of wills proved and registered in the courts of Bury St Edmunds Commisary and Sudbury Archdeaconry were selected by Samuel Tymms 'more with a view to illustrate the peculiar customs and language of the period than the topology or genealogy of the district' and transcribed for publication by the Camden Society in 1850. Inhabitants of Pittington, county Durham (1655)
'The booke of accomptes and recknings of this parrishe of Pittington wherin is conteined all thinges necessarie for the same accordinge to the Quene's Majestie's Injunctions and my lorde[ the bishop of Durham]'s Monitions.' Refers mostly to parishioners, but occasionally to outsiders on parish business.
