Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of dissolutions of partnerships gazetted in England and Wales. The names of the partners are given in full, surnames in capitals, followed by trade and address, and date of the end of the partnership. Each entry usually ends with the phrase 'Debts by ...', indicating which partner intended to continue, and resume the responsibilities of, the business. The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 16: described as: "Tower Street (both sides) - Short Street - Gloucester Street - Gilbert's Court - Gilberts Passage and Westminster Road No 8 Gilberts Buildings (two doors past the 'Tower') to the corner of the Waterloo Road consisting of Melina Place - Melina Buildings - Elizabeth Place - Oxford Place and the Freemasons' School." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 8 to 10 Gilbert's Buildings, 2 to 82 Tower Street (including the police station), 2 and 3 Short Street, 2 and 30 Gloucester Street, 2 to 7 Gilberts Court, 42 Gilberts Passage, 4 to 17 Melina Place, 1 to 4 Melina Buildings, 1 to 4 Elizabeth Place, 1 to 3 Oxford Place, Oxford Arms, and Freemasons School.AVIS. | Pupil Teachers in Kent: Girls

The Committee of Council on Education awarded annual grants for the training and support of pupil teachers and stipendiary monitors in schools in England, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Pupil teachers started training between the ages of 13 and 15, and 'must not be subject to any bodily infirmity likely to impair their usefulness as Pupil Teachers, such as scrofula, fits, asthma, deafness, great imperfections in the sight or voice, the loss of an eye from constitutional disease, or the loss of an arm or leg, or the permanent disability of either arm or leg, curvature of the spine, or a hereditary tendency to insanity'.
They also had to obtain certificates from the managers of the school (and their clergyman, in the case of Church of England schools) as to their moral character and that of their family; good conduct; punctuality, diligence, obedience, and attention to duty; and attentiveness to their religious duties.
This detailed statement in the annual report of the committee for the year ending 31 October 1851 lists schools by county, giving:
1. Name and Denomination of School, with these abbreviations - B, British and Foreign School Society; F. C., Free Church of Scotland; H. C., Home and Colonial School Society; N., National Society, or connected with the Church of England; R. C., Roman Catholic Poor-School Committee; Wesn., Wesleyan Methodist.
2. Annual grants conditionally awarded by the committee in augmentation of teachers' salaries, and in stipends to apprentices, and gratuities to teachers.
3. Month in which annual examination was to be held.

| Insolvents in Debtors' Prison, Whitecross Street, London
(1853)
Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette was issued monthly on the 1st of each month. Volume 28, for 1853, comprises issues numbers 325 to 336. The contents, compiled from the official sources, are mainly summaries of proceedings in the bankruptcy and insolvency courts, names of creditors, dissolution of partnerships and similar matters that would be of interest to the commercial world and their solicitors. This section, entitled 'Estates vested in Provisional Assignees' lists insolvents whose cases were dealt with in the Insolvent Court, whether on their own petitions or those of creditors. These twelve monthly issues cover the proceedings of the court from 4 December 1852 to 26 November 1853. Within each session the insolvents are listed alphabetically by surname, with address, occupation, and the name of the prison in which then held.AVIS. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
| Ticket-of-Leave Men
(1853-1854)
1205 convicts (1157 men, 48 women) were granted tickets-of-leave giving them conditional pardon from 10 October 1853 to 11 July 1854. This return gives full name, where and when convicted, offence, sentence in years, date of licence and annuity. Nine of the men's licences were revoked for fresh offences.AVIS. | British soldiers wounded at Inkerman

Sebastopol in the Crimea was the great Russian naval arsenal on the Black Sea. A combined assault by British, French and Turkish troops resulted in the reduction of Sebastopol and led to the Treaty of Paris of 27 April 1856, guaranteeing the independence of the Ottoman Empire. In the battle of Inkerman, of November 1854, the Russian troops made an ultimately unsuccessful attack on the allied army. In December the War Office issued lists of soldiers killed and wounded at Inkerman: there are separate returns for 2 to 6 November, 7 to 20 November, and 21 to 26 November, as well as one for soldiers missing, and one for members of the Naval Brigade killed and wounded. The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.AVIS.
