Apprentices (1770) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty (late payment of the 6d rate attracted double duty (D D) of 12d): the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 2 January to 31 December 1770. Inhabitants of Bristol (1775) On 7 October 1775 a loyal address of the 'Mayor, Burgesses, Clergy, Freeholders, and Inhabitants of the City of Bristol', 880 in all, was presented to king George III viewing 'with Astonishment the Conduct of a few disappointed Men, whose sophistical Arguments, and seditious Correspondences, have, in a great Measure, been the Occasion of deluding your American Subjects into open Rebellion', lamenting 'the Misfortune our American Brethren have brought upon themselves', and hoping 'that the Loyalty which prevails here, will soon convince our Fellow-Subjects in America of their Error, and bring them back to a just Sense of their Duty and Allegiance'. The address was presented to the king at St James's by fourteen gentlemen on the citizens' behalf, 'Which Address His Majesty was pleased to receive very graciously: And they all had the Honour to kiss His Majesty's Hand.' Lawyers, Law Officers and Clerks in London (1791) The London Law Directory section of the Universal British Directory includes lists of officers, officials and clerks from the High Court of Chancery, Hanaper Office, Examiners Office, Commissioners of Bankrupts, Corporation of Cursitors Office, Commissioners of Lunatics, the courts of King's Bench, Common Pleas, and Exchequer, the Exchequer Office of Pleas, &c. &c., the Duchy of Lancaster Office, the Lord Mayor's Court Office, and the Court of Marshalsea, as well as public notaries, officers of the judges' circuits, proprietors of provincial newspapers, sworn brokers of the City of London, and Jew brokers. Subscribers to Felicia Dorothea Browne's Poems (1808) Poems, by Felicia Dorothea Browne, published in Liverpool in 1808, attracted a wide subscription list, headed by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester, and Her Royal Highness the Princess Sophia of Gloucester. Although most of the subscribers were from London or Liverpool, there are many from elsewhere in the country. The names are arranged by initial letter of surname, each letter being headed by the names of nobility; christian names are rare, most surnames being prefixed by Mr., Mrs. or Miss.
