This society was established at Canterbury 26 January 1793, its chief objects being: to excite by premiums and otherwise, a spirit of emulation among the ploughmen; to encourage a spirit of industry among the labourers; to reward the labour and industry of those poor labourers and cottagers who shall breed up, or have bred up, the greatest number of legitimate children, either without any, or with the smallest relief from their respective parishes; to encourage diligence and industry in servants of both sexes employed in husbandry; to promote the knowledge of agriculture, by encouraging experiments on those subjects which are of the most importance to it, by distributing rewards to such persons as shall raise the largest and best crops of natural and artificial grasses, and the several sorts of grain, on any given quantity of ground, the nature of the soil being taken into consideration; to encourage the improvement of waste lands, by inclosing, draining, manuring, raising plantations, and by the introduction of vegetable food for cattle; to encourage the improvement of the breed of all sorts of live stock; and to provide for their health better than has been hitherto done; to promote all improvements in the various implements belonging to the farmer, and to introduce such new ones as the experience of other counties has proved more valuable than those now generally used in this; &c. | Freemen of Canterbury by Apprenticeship
(1392-1800)
No man or woman could trade in the city of Canterbury without having obtained 'freedom' of the city, unless they paid an annual fee to do so. Admissions of freemen were recorded on the Chamberlains' Accounts of the city, which were prepared annually from Lady Day (25 March) to Lady Day until 1752, and thereafter each set runs from 1 January to 31 December. The accounts for 1392 are incomplete, but thereafter until 1800 there is a complete series except for the years 1455 to 1457 and the year 1552-3. Joseph Meadows Cowper, Honorary Librarian to the Corporation, produced this extract of the names from 1392 to 1800, and the volume was privately printed in 1903. There are five groups of freemen: those who obtained freedom after serving out an apprenticeship to a freeman; the children of freemen; those who married a freeman's daughter; those who claimed freedom by 'redemption', i. e. by purchase; and those who were honoured by a gift of the freedom from the Mayor and Court of Aldermen. Cowper published his lists divided into the five categories: the sample scan is from the list of those who obtained freedom by marriage. Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (Wranglers, Senior Optimes and Junior Optimes), and within each class in order of score in the examination. Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Recipients of the Chancellor's Medals are annotated with (A) for the senior medal, (B) for the junior; and winners of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes are marked (1) senior, (2) for junior. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. J. Baxter of Lewes, proprietor of the Sussex Agricultural Press, published a compendium called 'The Library of Agricultural and Horticultural Knowledge; with an Appendix on Suspended Animation, Poisons, and the Principal Laws relating to Farming and Rural Affairs'. This was supported by a large subscription of interested gentlemen, farmers and gardeners, whose names and addresses are indexed here. | Officers of the British Army

The annual Army List, published By Authority, first lists officers of the rank of major and above, by rank, and with dates of appointment to each successive higher rank; holders of crosses, crosses with clasps (with number of clasps indicated), medals, medals with clasps (with number of clasps indicated) are marked as such; and an ornate W indicates those officers actually present in any of the actions of 16, 17 or 18 June 1815 and therefore awarded the Waterloo Medal. For each officer in this section, the final column notes his then present or immediately former regiment and/or office, if any. Next, all the officers of the army are listed, down to the rank of ensign, by regiment or corps, giving rank, name, date of rank in the regiment, and date of rank in the army, with occasional further notes. Again, holders of medals are duly noted, as in the first list. For each regiment the paymaster, adjutant, quartermaster, surgeon and assistant surgeons are named, as well as the civilian agent; and the regimental motto, battle honours, and colours of the facings and lace of the dress uniform are stated. After the British regiments of the line, the officers of the West India infantry, the Ceylon rifles, the Royal African Colonial Corps, the Cape Mounted Riflemen, the Royal Newfoundland Veterans, and the Royal Malta Fencibles are given; then the officers of the garrisons and other military establishments in Great Britain, Ireland, North America and Gibraltar (with Malta); the Royal Artillery; Commissariat Department; Medical Department; Chaplains' Department; officers retained on full pay; officers on British half pay; and officers on Foreign half pay (including the German Legion, the Brunswick Cavalry, the Brunswick Infantry, Chasseurs Brittaniques, Corsican Rangers, Dillon's Regiment, the Greek Light Infantry, Malta Regiment, Meuron's Regiment, Roll's Regiment, Sicilian Regiment, Watteville's Regiment, and the York Light Infantry Volunteers).TYLDEN.
