City of Westminster Voters (1780) The poll for the election of two citizens to serve in Parliament for the City and Liberty of Westminster was begun 7 September and ended 23 September 1780, the candidates being the Hon. Charles James Fox (F), Sir George Brydges Rodney, bart. (R), and the Right Hon. Thomas Pelham Clinton the Earl of Lincoln (L). In this poll book the names of all voters are given, by parish and within each parish by street, arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, with the individual votes cast shown in the right hand columns. Pages 1 to 48 cover the parish of St George, Hanover Square; 49 to 100, St Martin; 101 to 134, St Clement and St Mary le Strand; 135 to 155, St Ann, Soho; 157 to 166, St Paul, Covent Garden; 167 to 170, St Martin le Grand; 171 to 224, St James; 225 to 274, St Margaret and St John. Clerks and apprentices (1784) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 2 January to 31 December 1784. Sailors on board H. M. S. Leander (1796-1798) His Majesty's ship the Leander took part in the destruction of the French fleet in Aboukir Bay at the mouth of the Nile ('the Battle of the Nile') on the evening of the 1st and morning of the 2nd August 1798. This is the muster book for 1 June to 18 August 1798: being a continuation book in a series covering wages and victualling from June 1796, it also includes the names of some men who had died, deserted or been discharged from the ship from then to June 1798. Of the ship's complement of 343, this index covers the sailors, volunteers, and boys, as well as the supernumeraries: but not the marines, or the French prisoners taken after the battle. Electors in Hull (1835) A poll was taken 6 and 7 January 1835 for the election of members to serve in Parliament for the borough of Kingston-upon-Hull, the candidates being Matthew Davenport Hill, William Hutt and David Carruthers. This poll book lists all the electors in the wards of Hull (St Mary's, North, Trinity, Whitefriar, Humber, Austin, and South Myton), in Sculcoates, and in Sutton, Southcoates, Drypool &c. In each ward the names are arranged in five sections: Householders and Burgesses occupying Ten Pound Households; Burgesses not occupying Ten Pound Households; Unpolled Voters residing in the ward; Unpolled Freemen; and Non-Resident Freemen not polling. There are also short lists of votes that were tendered but the validity of which remained uncertain. In all cases full names and addresses are given: where electors voted, their votes are indicated in the right-hand columns, the numbers shown there being their numbers in the cumulating totals for each candidate. London and Middlesex crimes tried at the Central Criminal Court: victims and witnesses (1836) Henry Buckler copied in shorthand the proceedings of trials at the Central Criminal Court in London, and his transcripts were printed. This volume (iii), from 1836, covers sessions i to vi of the Copeland mayoralty of 1835 to 1836. The bulk of the cases were from London and Middlesex, with separate sections for Essex, Kent and Surrey, but, preceding all these, Capital Convictions. The names of the accused are annotated with an asterisk to show if they had previously been in custody; an obelisk indicates a known associate of bad characters. Most cases resulted in a guilty verdict, and a large proportion of these led to a sentence of transportation to Australia. Voters in the Parish of St George, Hanover Square, Westminster (1837) A poll was taken 26 July 1837 for the election of two members to represent the City of Westminster in Parliament. The candidates were Lieut.-Col. de Lacey Evans, John Temple Leader, and Gen. the Right Hon. sir George Murray, K. G. C. This poll book lists the electors with full name (surname first) and address (in italics), dashes indicating for whom they cast their votes. The names are listed alphabetically by first letter of surname, arranged in the eight parishes of Westminster, plus the extra-parochial Precincts of the Savoy. TENNISON. Cost: £6.00.
