Printer's widow elected to a pension
(1836)
The Printers' Pension Society was formed 3 December 1827 for 'the relief of aged, infirm, and distressed workmen, and their widows, in the several branches of the printing trade'. This list of pensioners elected through to December 1881 sets out in tabular form sequential number; year of election; full name (surname first); occupation (such as compositor, pressman, warehouseman, &c.); age at election; total amount paid (to December 1881 where still then living); and year of decease. The names of pensioners still alive at the end of 1881 are given in italics. Many convicts transported to Australia subsequently absconded from custody or from farmers or traders with whom they had been put to work. The Principal Superintendent of Convicts for New South Wales issued detailed notices to the public 'to use their utmost exertion in apprehending and lodging them in safe custody' and warning against harbouring or employing them. The lists give full name (surname first); name of the transport ship by which the convict had been deported to Australia; number; age; birthplace; trade or profession; height; appearance (complexion, hair, eyes); and a brief description of how or where absconded. February 1836.

Surrey crimes tried at the Central Criminal Court: the accused

Henry Buckler copied in shorthand the proceedings of trials at the Central Criminal Court in London, and his transcripts were printed. This volume (iii), from 1836, covers sessions i to vi of the Copeland mayoralty of 1835 to 1836. The bulk of the cases were from London and Middlesex, with separate sections for Essex, Kent and Surrey, but, preceding all these, Capital Convictions. The names of the accused are annotated with an asterisk to show if they had previously been in custody; an obelisk indicates a known associate of bad characters. Most cases resulted in a guilty verdict, and a large proportion of these led to a sentence of transportation to Australia. This index covers those accused in the Surrey cases of February 1836.SMITH.
