Masters of apprentices registered in Northampton (1756) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Liverpool return. Convicted Criminals (1765) When Joseph Redington, Assistant Keeper of the Public Records, calendared the Home Office papers from the accession of king George III, 25 October 1760, to the end of 1765, he gathered together references to criminals from the State Papers Domestic, Warrant Books, and Criminal Papers, and these were printed in tabular form. The information is set out in four sections: - 1. Letters to Judges: giving name of the judge; name of the convict; crime; sentence; where tried or confined; date; page. 2. Petitions in Favour: stating from whom; name of convict; crime; sentence; where tried or confined; object of petition (such as pardon or commutation); date. 3. Reports or Certificates of the Judges, chiefly addressed to the king, on the Cases of Criminals: with name of judge; name of criminal; crime; sentence; where tried or confined; condition of pardon. 4. Warrants and Letters relating to Criminals convicted, being Pardons, Respites &c.: with nature of document; name of convict; crime; sentence; where tried or confined; date; page. Warwickshire Marriages (1796) Volume 2 of the Monthly Magazine and British Register contains issues 6 to 11, for July to December 1796, plus a supplement. Each issue included notices of news, marriages and deaths in and around London, and a section entitled Provincial Occurrences, 'including accounts of all Improvements relating to Agriculture, the Commerce, the Economy, the Police, &c. of every part of the Kingdom; with Notices of eminent Marriages, and of all the Deaths reported in the Provincial Prints: to which are added, Biographical Anecdotes of remarkable and distinguished Characters.' Baptists in London supporting Missionary Work in Bengal (1804-1805) The Baptist Missionary Society established a mission at Serampore in Bengal. Letters from the missionaries from 27 June 1804 to 20 October 1805 describing their work were published in England as 'Periodical Accounts relative to the Baptist Missionary Society', prefaced by 'A List of Persons baptised in Bengal, belonging to the Church of Christ at Serampore' running back to 1 November 1795. With this was this appendix, a list of subscriptions, collections and donations from 1 October 1804 to 1 October 1805, including (pages 146-150) 'Collections and Donations for Translating the Scriptures into the Eastern Languages'. Poachers committed to prison in Huntingdonshire (1833-1836) In response to a parliamentary enquiry, returns were made in early 1836 from each of the gaols in England and Wales of the number of commitments, prosecutions, convictions and sentences under the game laws since 1 November 1833. The returns varied in scope; most give the full name of each poacher, date, and sentence. The usual offence is that of 'poaching', i. e. being out armed in the night in pursuit of game; occasionally it was aggravated by assaulting a gamekeeper &c. SALLOWAY. Cost: £6.00.
