(1835-1836)
At this period, the foreign trade of ships plying to and from the British isles involved about 150,000 men on 15,000 ships; and the coasting trade about a quarter as many more. A large proportion of the seamen on these ships were British subjects, and so liable to be pressed for service in the Royal Navy; but there was no general register by which to identify them, so in 1835 parliament passed a Merchant Seamen's Registration Bill. Under this act this large register of British seamen was compiled, based on ships' crew lists gathered in British and Irish ports, and passed up to the registry in London. Each seaman was assigned a number, and the names were arranged in the register by first two letters of the surname (our sample scan shows one of the pages for 'Sm'); in addition, an attempt was made to separate out namesakes by giving the first instance of a name (a), the second (b), and so on. But no effective method was devised to prevent the same man being registered twice as he appeared in a second crew list; moreover, the original crew lists were clearly difficult for the registry clerks to copy, and some of the surname spellings appear to be corrupted. A parliamentary committee decided that the system devised did not answer the original problem, and this register was abandoned after less than two years: but it is an apparently comprehensive source for British merchant seamen in 1835 to 1836. The register records the number assigned to each man; his name; age; birthplace; quality (master, captain, mate, 2nd mate, mariner, seaman, fisherman, cook, carpenter, boy &c.); and the name and home port of his ship, with the date of the crew list (usually at the end of a voyage). Most of the men recorded were born in the British Isles, but not all (for instance, Charleston and Stockholm appear in the sample scan). The final column 'How disposed of' is rarely used, and indicates those instances where a man died, was discharged, or deserted his ship during the voyage.PERRIE. | Officers of the British Army on Foreign Half-Pay

The New Annual Army List, corrected to 7 February 1840, was published in London by Lieut. H. G. Hart. The section entitled 'Officers on the Retired Full Pay and Half Pay' lists all such officers, by rank from captain down to ensign, with paymasters, adjutants, quarter-masters, medical staff and chaplains. (Officers above the rank of captain were retained in the main list of Field Officers). These lists are annotated with dates of successive ranks, when placed on half-pay, and the name of the regiment, &c., and with symbols indicating the officers present at Trafalgar (T), in the Peninsula or the South of France (P), and Waterloo (W). Names of officers on retired full-pay are given in italics. | Electors for Barnoldswick
(1848)
On 14 and 15 December 1848 an election took place for a Knight of the Shire for the West Riding of Yorkshire in the House of Commons. The candidates were Edmund Denison and sir Culling Eardley Eardley, gaining 14,743 and 11,795 votes respectively. The county franchise at this period included freeholders of land worth 40s or more a year; £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders; and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. This poll book was published in 1849.
Former poll books had been compiled from the sheriff's returns; but as these were now transmitted to the Home Office immediately after an election, in this instance the polling was marked from the check-clerk's returns, carefully compared with the registers marked in the poll booths at the time of voting.
The votes for the respective candidates are indicated by the numerals 1 (Denison) and 2 (Eardley). The omission of these numerals indicates that the elector did not vote. Many names which appear on the register of particular townships are completely omitted in this poll book: in all these cases, the same name will be found recorded in some other township, the elector having two or more qualifications. In such cases, his name only appears in the poll book in the actual township for which he chose to vote; or, if he did not vote at all, in that township for which he was qualified that lay closest to his actual residence.
The townships are arranged alphabetically within polling district; and within each township the names are arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, and the elector's residence is given. Many of the electors resided outside the township for which they were qualified - some in other counties. Moreover, at the end of each polling district there is a list of persons registered to poll in that district, from townships is other districts. PERRIE. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

The China Medal was awarded to soldiers and sailors involved in the various actions of the war against China, in which this ship was engaged from 1856 to 1860. The medals were either delivered on board or sent on in 1862: except that many of the men were no longer immediately traceable, and the remarks on the roll show that some medals were not sent on for several years, and some were never sent. After the main roll there is a section showing which of the men also qualified for clasps. Separate clasps were awarded for men who had been in receipt of the China Medal of 1842; for the taking of Fatshan in 1857, Canton in 1857, Taku Forts in 1858, Taku Forts in 1860, and Pekin in 1860. Most of the men on this ship are shown as having been given the Taku Forts 1860 clasp, for being actually present at the capture of the Taku Forts 21 August 1860.PERRIE. | Outstanding soldiers of the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot

Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. Both lists are indexed here, and each gives rank, name, regimental number, date of recommendation and date of issue. (The sample scan is from the 32nd foot). The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1860, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. PERRIE. The electoral register for the City of Oxford for 1882 lists persons entitled to vote at any election of a member or members to serve in parliament for the city or parliamentary borough of Oxford in that year. The names are arranged alphabetically in the parishes of Saint Aldate, Binsey, Saint Clement, Cowley, Saint Ebbe, Saint Giles, Headington, Holywell, Iffley, Saint John, Saint Martin, Saint Mary Magdalen, Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Michael, North Hincksey and South Hincksey (in Berkshire), Saint Peter in the East, Saint Peter le Bailey, and Saint Thomas. In each case the voter number (out of a total of 6190) is given in the first column; then full name, surname first; place of abode; nature of qualification (such as house, &c.); and the name and situation of the qualifying property (often the same as the place of abode). At the end of each parish there is a list of freemen to be registered as parliamentary voters, with number, full name (surname first) and place of abode; and a list of lodgers registered as parliamentary voters, with number, full name (surname first), description of rooms occupied, and whether furnished or not, address, amount of rent paid, and name and address of landlord.PERRIE. | Seaforth Highlanders fighting in Egypt

The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. Both the 1st and the 2nd battalions, Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's) served in this campaign. The 1st battalion embarked for Bombay 21 February 1871. After returning to Aden 25 February, the battalion was sent to Egypt 2 August 1882, returning to England 15 October 1882. The 2nd battalion embarked for India 16 February 1879, but a large contingent joined the 1st battalion for the Egyptian campaign, and Seaforth Highlanders took part in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir.PERRIE.
