The Institute of Civil Engineers was established by charter of George IV in 1828. The four classes of the institution were the Members, Associates, Graduates and Honorary Members. This membership list, corrected to 1 January 1867, lists members alphabetically by surname and christian name, with date of election (or, for those who had previously been associates, date of election as associate (A) and date of transfer to member (M)), and address.MANBY. | Boys entering Haileybury College, Hertfordshire

Haileybury College, near Hertford, was founded by the East India Company in 1806, and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1864. This register of pupils entering the school from 1862 to 1931 was edited by a master there, Laurence Arthur Speakman. The boys are listed by term of joining the school, and then alphabetically by name (in bold), surname first (in capitals). There is then usually a precise birthdate, and the name and address of his father; his period at the school, starting with abbreviations to indicate the house to which he belonged (B., Batten; B. F., Bartle Frere; C., Colvin; E., Edmonstone; Ha., Hailey; Hi., Highfield; L., Lawrence; Le B., Le Bas; M., Melvill; Th., Thomason; T., Trevelyan), and the first and last forms attended (e. g., IV., fourth form). Where a member of a school team there is then an indication (e. g., XI., cricket). For some pupils, with whom the school had lost touch, Speakman was only able to record the details of their time at Haileybury; but for most a brief career synopsis is then given, and current address (as in 1931) or date of death.

| Classics students at Cambridge University

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (First, Second and Third), and within each class in order of score in the examination (students getting exactly equal marks are bracketed together). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. In each year two students were singled out for the Chancellor's Medals, and these are marked, (A) for senior, (B) for junior (or with a paragraph mark if adjudged of equal merit). These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Manchester Fat Cattle, Poultry and Dog Show took place at the Zoological Gardens, Belle Vue, from 22 to 24 December 1874. This comprised the Second Great Annual Exhibition of Fat Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, Roots, and Corn, and the Fourteenth Annual Exhibition of Poultry, Pigeon and Dogs; for which this single joint catalogue was issued. The full names and addresses of exhibitors (and, where appropriate, breeders) were given, both in a general directory and in the detailed class lists of exhibits. The exhibits in this section were divided into dorking; spanish; cochin china; bramah pootra; polish fowl; malay; creve coeur; houdan; game fowl; ducks; ornamental water fowl; geese; turkeys; extra stock; hamburgh; and bantams.MANBY. | Pupil Teachers training to become Schoolmistresses

The Education Department set examinations for candidates for admission into training colleges, and to become teachers. This is the class list (in order of merit) of the women who took that examination at Christmas 1875, and who were awarded Second Class results. The first column gives the position in the exam results (no number is inserted where the candidate obtained the same marks as the last to whose name a number is prefixed); then there is the candidate's name (surname first); school in which engaged (N. for National School, Ch. Church of England, B. British School, W. Wesleyan, R. Roman Catholic, P. Parochial, Bd. Board School, U. Poor Law Union School); and then Training College at which examined. The Royal Medical Benevolent College at Epsom in Surrey was founded in 1853 for the orphans of the medical profession, and evolved to become a public school still largely catering for sons of doctors and surgeons. In 1955 this register of pupils, from 1855 to 1954, edited by T. R. Thomson, was published. The sample scan is from 1880. The entries are arranged alphabetically by surname under year of entrance to the school; surname first (in bold), christian names, and then (in most cases), the father's name, occupation and address: then the boy's year of birth (b.), year of leaving (l.), occupation, and, where known, year of death (d.) The Education Department set examinations of trainee teachers at the various training colleges in Britain. This is the class list of the women who took examinations at the Teacher Training College at Christmas 1876. The names are given for the second year first, arranged by division in the examination (in order of merit for the first and second divisions), and then for the students of the first year, arranged similarly. Full names are given (with initials for middle names). The letter (D.) indicates that the candidate had obtained a certificate of competency as a teacher of drawing. MANBY.
