Masters of English Merchantmen at St Thomas (1862)
The custom house at St Thomas, a Danish colony in the West Indies, issued daily lists of ships entered and cleared, which were published as the Marine Register in the twice weekly polyglot newspaper St Thomae Tidende. The reports of entries give precise date of arrival, nationality, type and name of the vessel (sailing ships in italics, steamships in capitals), the captain's surname (in bold), and whence the ship had come, sometimes adding a brief note about the cargo. The lists of ships cleared for departure have similar details, but with the ship's proposed destination. St Thomas was an important harbour not only serving inter-island Caribbean trade, and trading with England and the north and south American colonies, but also as an entrepot or intermediate destination, ships leaving with goods imported from elsewhere. A large proportion of the shipping was English, virtually all the steamers flying the Red Ensign.

Gun & Co. of 6 Prince of Wales' Road, London, in about 1870 published this fifth 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1860, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. LANDRY. | Masters of Merchantmen Lost at Sea by Stranding

Abstracts of the returns made to the Board of Trade of shipping casualties which occurred on or near the coasts or in rivers and harbours of the United Kingdom; and to British vessels elsewhere; and to foreign vessels on or near the coasts or in the rivers and harbours of British possessions abroad (including the Great Lakes of North America). The tables are arranged into the broad divisions of Total Losses at Sea (founderings, strandings, collisions, other causes, and missing); Partial Losses at Sea (founderings, strandings, collisions and other causes); Total Losses in Rivers, Lakes and Harbours (founderings, strandings, collisions and other causes); and Partial Losses in Rivers, Lakes and Harbours (founderings, strandings, collisions and other causes). In each case they state (so far as known) the date; name and age of the vessel; port of registry (if British); class in Lloyd's Register, Liverpool Book or Bureau Veritas; description of vessel, and whether iron (I.) or wood (W.); tons; number of crew; name of master (usually surname and initials); name and address of owner(s); port sailed from; port bound to; cargo and number of passengers (if any); number of lives lost; wind (direction and strength); and place of casualty. |  Outstanding soldiers of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry

Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 43rd Regimental District - Oxford. The 1st battalion embarked for India 28 September 1872, moved to Burmah 1879 to 1882, and was stationed at Bangalore by 1885. It returned from India in 1887, was moved to Ireland in 1892, and by 1895 was based at Dublin. In 1899 the battalion was sent out to South Africa, adding "South Africa, 1900-1902", "Relief of Kimberley" and "Paardeberg" to the regimental honours. The 2nd battalion was sent out from England to Gibraltar in 1884, and on to Egypt in 1885, and from there to India in 1886, taking part in the North West Frontier campaign of 1897 to 1898. | Medical practitioners qualified in Britain or Ireland but living abroad

The Medical Directory was split into several sections. The Practitioners Resident Abroad section covered all medical practitioners who, having qualified in Britain or Ireland or otherwise registered under the medical Acts of Great Britain and Ireland, were living abroad. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'.
