Agriculturists and horticulturists
(1829) J. Baxter of Lewes, proprietor of the Sussex Agricultural Press, published in 1830 a compendium called 'The Library of Agricultural and Horticultural Knowledge; with an Appendix on Suspended Animation, Poisons, and the Principal Laws relating to Farming and Rural Affairs'. This was supported by a large subscription of interested gentlemen, farmers and gardeners. There is also this list of subscribers who paid a guinea each for the purchase of a handsome silver tureen which was presented to John Ellman in 1829 'as a token of sincere regard and as a tribute of his great merit, on his retiring from Glynde Farm, in which for more than half a century he has devoted himself to the interest of Agriculture; especially in improving the breed of South-down Sheep, and for his much-admired Conduct to his Labourers.
