Inhabitants of St Ives in Cornwall (1790-1797) The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Nottingham). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797. ARTHER. Hertfordshire hunters (1784-1799) Highly condensed abstracts of Hertfordshire Sessions Books and Minute Books were prepared by William le Hardy, and published for the County Council in 1935. An act of the 24th year of king George III instituted licences to kill game, which cost 10s 6d for registered gamekeepers, and 2 guineas for others. Appendix VIII is a list of persons granted two-guinea licences for killing game: in each case the full name (surname first) is given; occupation; residence; and the years during which licences were purchased (e. g., 92-93 for 1791 to 1793). Masters of apprentices registered in Scotland (1803) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Shareholders of the Newcastle Commercial Banking Company (1838) The provincial banks of England and Wales made annual returns to the Stamp Office of their proprietors or shareholders. Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 3: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises the West side of Walworth Road, from Walworth House to Walworth Gate, including The Toll House, Sutherland St. (both sides), the whole of Sutherland Square, and Terrace, Charlotte St., Charlotte Row, Princes Row, Graham St., Blucher St., Montpelier St. (East side), North side of Hill St. to Kettle's Place. Including Kettle's Place". HO 107/1567. This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 6 Keens Row; 1 to 32 Sutherland Street; 1, 2 and 6 to 12 Sutherland Terrace; 1 to 17 Sutherland Square; 1 to 11 Walworth Place; 1 to 7 Charlotte Street; 1 and 2 Sutherland Cottages; 1 Sutherland Mews; 1 to 24 Charlotte Row; 1 to 13 Princes Row; Montpelier Tavern; Craigs Cottage; 1 to 13 Graham Street; 1 to 7 Blucher Street; 1 to 4 Montpelier Street; 1 to 14 Hill Street; 1 to 19 James Place; and 1 to 6 Kettles Place. London Policemen (1843-1857) The Metropolitan Police Register of Joiners (MEPO 4/334) lists policemen joining the force 1 January 1843 to 1 April 1857 (warrant numbers 19893 to 35804). The register is alphabetical, in so far as the recruits are listed chronologically grouped under first letter of surname. It gives Date of Appointment, Name, Number of Warrant, Cause of Removal from Force (resigned, dismissed, promoted or died), and Date of Removal. Although the register was closed for new entrants at the end of 1842, the details of removals were always recorded, some being twenty or more years later. Those recruits not formerly in the police, the army, or some government department, were required to provide (normally) at least two letters of recommendation from persons of standing, and details of these are entered on the facing pages: the names in these are indexed separately - this index refers only to the police constables. Where a recruit was only recently arrived in the metropolis, the names and addresses of the recommenders can be invaluable for tracing where he came from. ARTHER. Cost: £8.00. Wesleyan Ministers (1867) The Wesleyan Methodist church in England and Ireland held annual conferences, abbreviated minutes of which were printed in the Wesleyan Methodist Magazine of September and October each year. These minutes include a complete list of the stations of the ministers for the coming year, with the names of the preachers 'on trial' and supernumeraries, arranged by district.
