The annual Army List, published By Authority, first lists officers of the rank of major and above, by rank, and with dates of appointment to each successive higher rank; holders of crosses, crosses with clasps (with number of clasps indicated), medals, medals with clasps (with number of clasps indicated) are marked as such; and an ornate W indicates those officers actually present in any of the actions of 16, 17 or 18 June 1815 and therefore awarded the Waterloo Medal. For each officer in this section, the final column notes his then present or immediately former regiment and/or office, if any. Next, all the officers of the army are listed, down to the rank of ensign, by regiment or corps, giving rank, name, date of rank in the regiment, and date of rank in the army, with occasional further notes. Again, holders of medals are duly noted, as in the first list. For each regiment the paymaster, adjutant, quartermaster, surgeon and assistant surgeons are named, as well as the civilian agent; and the regimental motto, battle honours, and colours of the facings and lace of the dress uniform are stated. After the British regiments of the line, the officers of the West India infantry, the Ceylon rifles, the Royal African Colonial Corps, the Cape Mounted Riflemen, the Royal Newfoundland Veterans, and the Royal Malta Fencibles are given; then the officers of the garrisons and other military establishments in Great Britain, Ireland, North America and Gibraltar (with Malta); the Royal Artillery; Commissariat Department; Medical Department; Chaplains' Department; officers retained on full pay; officers on British half pay; and officers on Foreign half pay (including the German Legion, the Brunswick Cavalry, the Brunswick Infantry, Chasseurs Brittaniques, Corsican Rangers, Dillon's Regiment, the Greek Light Infantry, Malta Regiment, Meuron's Regiment, Roll's Regiment, Sicilian Regiment, Watteville's Regiment, and the York Light Infantry Volunteers).HARPOUR. The New Annual Army List, corrected to 7 February 1840, was published in London by Lieut. H. G. Hart. It lists all serving officers, first of all a list of General and Field Officers by rank from field marshal down to major; and then by regiment, including all ranks down to ensign, with paymasters, adjutants, quarter-masters, surgeons and assistant-surgeons. These lists are all annotated with dates of rank in the army and regiment, and with symbols indicating the officers present at Trafalgar (T), in the Peninsula or the South of France (P), and Waterloo (W). A superscript p indicates that the commission was purchased; an asterisk that it was temporary. The regiments and units are listed in order of precedence: Head Quarters staff; Life Guards; Horse Guards; 7 regiments of Dragoon Guards; 17 regiments of Dragoons; 98 regiments of Foot; the Rifle Brigade; two West India regiments of Foot; Ceylon Rifles; Royal African Colonial Corps; Cape Mounted Rifles; Royal Newfoundland Veterans; Royal Malta Fencibles; Recruiting Staff; Royal Artillery; Royal Engineers; Royal Marines; Commissariat; and the Medical Department. The Royal Kalendar lists general and field officers of the British Army - five Field Marshals, 95 generals, 138 major-generals, 310 colonels, 637 lieutenant-colonels, 697 majors, in order of precedence according to year of precedence, and with the regiment indicated for each; then there are aides-de-camp to her Majesty queen Victoria; retired officers specially allowed to retain their ranks; and then the queen's land forces, set out regiment by regiment and battalion by battalion, naming the colonel, lieutenant-colonel and major for each, officers of the British garrisons, and of the Tower of London; and the officers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery (including the Field Train) and the Corps of Royal Engineers, by rank.HARPOUR. Rowing was one of the English sports covered in detail in the pages of Bell's Life in London, and from these was compiled a compendium called the Aquatic Oracle. The text is divided into two main parts: Gentlemen Amateurs and Watermen. The public school at Marlborough in Wiltshire was founded in 1843. In 1952 this, 9th, edition of the college register was published, being a revision by L. Warwick James of the 8th edition (of 1936): but for the years before 1936 it does not merely repeat the 8th edition, because Warwick James was able to correct the 19th-century entries with information from newly-discovered letters and books from 1843 to 1853, and the school lists from 1844 onwards. The roll is arranged by year, and within each year by term of entrance, and then alphabetically by surname within each term. Each boy is assigned a number within the year: then his name is given, surname first, and, in brackets, where a boarder, his house. The houses within the college were called B1, B2, B3, C1, C2 and C3, and the Lower School (L Sch); the out college houses were Preshute, Priory, Cotton, Hermitage, Littlefield, Barton Hill, Summerfield and Upcot. Then there is given the boy's father's name (surname and initials) and address (at entrance), the boy's date of birth (b) and month of leaving (l). Where the boy represented the school at Rugby football (XV) or cricket (XI), in the rifle corps (VIII, or RC XI), that is indicated. | Missing Next-of-Kin and Heirs-at-Law

The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1880, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. The Calendar of the Trinity College of Music, London, for the year 1929 includes lists of licentiates and associates including these musicians. Surnames and initials are given; but women are distinguished by having their (first) christian name stated. The college provided instruction to nearly 1000 students a year, with examinations of 66,000 candidates a year at 700 local centres throughout the world. HARPOUR.
