(1860)
The Civil Service Commission published an annual list of all persons who had obtained certificates of qualification for appointment in the various public departments. The list gives full name (surname first); department (such as Post Office, or Inland Revenue); situation (such as Letter-carrier, or Clerk); and date of certificate. Candidates whose names are preceded by a dagger obtained appointments as the result of competition; a double dagger indicates open competition. Those whose names are preceded by an asterisk obtained honorary additions to their certificates either for proficiency in extra subjects chosen by themselves, or for marked proficiency in the prescribed subjects. Then follows a further list of these candidates who had obtained Honorary Additions to their Certificates in this way: giving name (surname and initials); position in the service (department and situation); subjects for which honorary additions were made; and 'extent of knowledge displayed' (such as Creditable, Fair, or Very Creditable). 1 January to 31 December 1860.PEMBREY. | Oxford Voters: Cowley

The poll of the freemen and electors of the City of Oxford was taken 17 November 1868, the candidates being the Rt Hon Edward Cardwell (C), William Vernon Harcourt esq., Q.C. (H), and James Parker Deane, Esq., Q.C., D.C.L. (D). This poll book, published by the Oxford Chronicle, lists all the voters alphabetically by parish or township, freemen's names being preceded by an asterisk. Postal addresses are given, including street numbers, and in the case of freemen occupation is usually given. Lodgers are listed separately at the end of each section. The areas covered are: All Saints, St Aldate, Binsey, St Clement, Cowley, St Ebbe, St Giles, Headington, North Hincksey, South Hincksey, Holywell, Iffley, St John, St Martin, St Mary Magdalen, St Mary the Virgin, St Michael, St Peter in the East, St Peter le Bailey, and St Thomas; and there is also a list of Out of Town (non-resident) freemen who voted.PEMBREY. The Post Office Directory of Birmingham with its Suburbs, edited by E. R. Kelly, and published in 1878, has two main alphabetical lists - Court and Commercial. The suburbs included are Aston, Bickenhill Park, Birchfield End, Castle Bromwich, Erdington, Saltley (with Washwood Heath), Ward End (including Little Bromwich) and Witton, in Warwickshire; Handsworth (with Soho), Harborne, Perry Barr and Smethwick, in Staffordshire; and King's Heath, King's Norton, Moseley, Northfield, Selly Oak and Yardley (including Hall Green and Stechford) in Worcestershire. The electoral register for the City of Oxford for 1882 lists persons entitled to vote at any election of a member or members to serve in parliament for the city or parliamentary borough of Oxford in that year. The names are arranged alphabetically in the parishes of Saint Aldate, Binsey, Saint Clement, Cowley, Saint Ebbe, Saint Giles, Headington, Holywell, Iffley, Saint John, Saint Martin, Saint Mary Magdalen, Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Michael, North Hincksey and South Hincksey (in Berkshire), Saint Peter in the East, Saint Peter le Bailey, and Saint Thomas. In each case the voter number (out of a total of 6190) is given in the first column; then full name, surname first; place of abode; nature of qualification (such as house, &c.); and the name and situation of the qualifying property (often the same as the place of abode). At the end of each parish there is a list of freemen to be registered as parliamentary voters, with number, full name (surname first) and place of abode; and a list of lodgers registered as parliamentary voters, with number, full name (surname first), description of rooms occupied, and whether furnished or not, address, amount of rent paid, and name and address of landlord.PEMBREY. | Boys entering Epsom College

The Royal Medical Benevolent College at Epsom in Surrey was founded in 1853 for the orphans of the medical profession, and evolved to become a public school still largely catering for sons of doctors and surgeons. In 1955 this register of pupils, from 1855 to 1954, edited by T. R. Thomson, was published. The sample scan is from 1880. The entries are arranged alphabetically by surname under year of entrance to the school; surname first (in bold), christian names, and then (in most cases), the father's name, occupation and address: then the boy's year of birth (b.), year of leaving (l.), occupation, and, where known, year of death (d.). From 1880 onwards the house to which the boy belonged is also indicated: the boarding houses were Carr (C.), Forest (F.), Granville (G.), Holman (H.), Propert (P.) and Wilson (W.); and Crawfurd (Cr.), Hart Smith (H. S.) and Rosebery (R.) are the houses for day scholars. From 1895 to 1927 there was a junior school, called Lower School (L. S.), taking in boys from the age of 8, many passing seamlessly into the main school at age 12 to 14. This is the index to the year 1915, when the Reverend Canon Walter John Barton was headmaster. The Medical Directory was split into several sections. The London section covered all medical practitioners resident within the London postal district. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. The Royal College of Surgeons, established by royal charters, issued this calendar 1 August 1928, including official lists of all its fellows, members, licentiates and diplomates. The register of fellows gives full name (surname first) and address (in italics), with dates of admission as fellow and member. The list of members gives year of admission, full name (surname first) and town or country of residence. The lists of licentiates give year of admission and full name, but no indication of current address: entries of fellows of the college are prefixed with a double dagger, those of members with an asterisk. The lists of diplomates give year of admission and full name (surname first), with those diplomates who were neither members nor fellows of the college indicated with a dagger.
