The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 11: described as: "Saint George's Circus No 7 (Langs) to No 96 Blackfriars Road and the Magdalen Hospital - Wirtemberg Place - Valentine Place (both sides) - Angel Place to railing - Pontipool Pl - and both sides of Gray Street." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 7 Saint Georges Circus, 96 to 124 Blackfriars Road (including Magdalen Hospital), 3 to 10 Wirtemburgh (sic) Place, 1 to 35 Valentine Place, 1 to 7 Pontipool Place, 1 to 29 Angel Place, and 2 to 41 Grey (sic) Street (including John O Groates). The unmarried housemaids in the Magdalen Hospital for the Reception, Maintenance and Employment of Penitent Females are only identified by initials, and so are not covered by this index.OSBAND. The Poll Book for North Lincolnshire (Lindsey) in the General Election of 1852 was prepared from the poll clerks' lists, and so is arranged polling district by polling district, and within those by township or parish, but with non-voters listed separately at the end of each polling district. The 9,620 voters are listed not by residence, but by the parish or township in which lay the property that gave the right to vote: consequently 260 electors appear twice on the register. 1,797 did not vote. Many of the electors lived outside the area, or even outside the county. The names are listed roughly alphabetically by surname, with christian name, residence and occupation: with a key to the nature of their property (freehold fr, rented rt, or copyhold ch), and for whom the votes were cast (CR.: Rt. Hon. R. A. Christopher, who received 5,585 votes; CH.: Sir Montague J. Cholmeley, 4,777; S.: James Banks Stanhope, 5,575). Each elector had two votes. The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).OSBAND.
