The New Annual Army List first lists officers of the rank of major and above, by rank, and with dates of appointment to each successive higher rank, and (where appropriate) when placed on half pay. An asterisk indicates temporary rank; a superscript p shows that a commission was purchased; a dagger shows officers on the half pay of their last regimental commission. An ornate W indicates those officers actually present in any of the actions of 16, 17 or 18 June 1815 and therefore awarded the Waterloo Medal; P is put before the name of an officer who served in the Peninsula or the South of France; T for the Battle of Trafalgar; VC for the Victoria Cross. For each officer in this section, the final column notes his then present or immediately former regiment and/or office, if any. Next, all the officers of the army are listed, down to the rank of ensign, by regiment or corps, giving rank, name, date of rank in the regiment, and date of rank in the army, with occasional further notes. Again, holders of medals are duly noted, as in the first list. For each regiment the paymaster, adjutant, quartermaster, surgeon and assistant surgeons are named, as well as the civilian agent; and the regimental motto, battle honours, and colours of the facings and lace of the dress uniform are stated. After the British regiments of the line, the Rifle Brigade, the officers of the West India infantry, the Ceylon rifles, the Cape Mounted Riflemen, the Royal Canadian Rifles, St Helena Regiment and the Gold Coast Artillery Corps are given; then the officers of the garrisons and other military establishments; the Royal Artillery; Royal Engineers; Royal Marines; Commissariat Department; Medical Department; Staff Officers of Pensioners; Chaplains' Department; Staff (of Great Britain, Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, British Columbia, Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon, East Indies, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Heligoland, Hong Kong, Ionian Islands, Jamaica (including Honduras), Malta, Mauritius, Newfoundland, North America, St Helena, the Western Coast of Africa, and the Windward and Leeward Islands); Military and Civil Department; and Barrack Masters. Then there is a separate list of officers retained on retired full pay and half pay (including the German Legion, the Brunswick Cavalry, the Brunswick Infantry, Chasseurs Brittaniques, Royal Corsican Rangers, the Greek Light Infantry, Royal Malta Regiment, Meuron's Regiment, Roll's Regiment, Sicilian Regiment, Watteville's Regiment, the York Light Infantry Volunteers, Foreign Veteran Battalion and the Foreign Corps of Waggoners).OLLERTON. Volume 76 of The Law Times, 'The Journal of The Law and The Lawyers', a weekly publication, runs from 3 November 1883 to 26 April 1884. Much of the journal is taken up with law reports, leading articles, &c., and the 'Solicitors' Department' contains several regular features of great interest. Lists of bankrupts, liquidations by arrangement, dividends and orders of discharge extracted from the London Gazette were published each week, and these have been indexed both for the principals and their solicitors.OLLERTON. Extracts from the Registry of County Courts' Judgments. These judgments were not necessarily for debt. In some cases they were for damages on properly disputed causes of action, but no distinction was made on the Register. Judgments settled otherwise than through the Court may appear, unless 'Satisfaction' was entered up within the fourteen days allowed for that purpose. | Missing Next-of-Kin and Heirs-at-Law

The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1880, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. |  Outstanding soldiers of the Royal West Surrey Regiment

Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 2nd Regimental District - Guildford. The 1st battalion returned from Bombay in 1879, and by 1885 was established at Tralee. It embarked for Malta 24 December 1891, and moved on to India, where it was stationed at Umballa in Bengal by 1895. The 2nd battalion embarked for Malta 26 July 1877, going on to India in 1878, and in 1885 was at Cawnpore. The battalion was moved into Upper Burmah in 1886 ("Burma, 1885-1887" and "Tirah"), back to India in 1888, returning to England in 1894. In 1899 the 2nd battalion was sent to South Africa, adding "South Africa, 1899-1902" and "Relief of Ladysmith" to the colours.OLLERTON. Cost: £8.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

The Institution of Mining Engineers was established 1 July 1889 and incorporated by royal charter 9 February 1915. This list of members is corrected up to 28 December 1949. Five grades of members are listed: Honorary Members (Hon. M. I. Min. E.); Members (M. I. Min. E.); Associate Members (Assoc. M. I. Min. E.); Students (Stud. I. Min. E.); and Associates (Assoc. I. Min. E.). The grade of Associate Member comprised all persons who were registered as associate members on 31 January 1933: every candidate for admission to that class after that date must be a person at least 23 years of age who either must be 'engaged in pursuits of a character which in the opinion of the Council are likely to lead up to qualification as a Member'; or who 'by his position and attainments, has contributed to the advancement of the science or practice of mining engineering'. The members' names are listed alphabetically (in bold) by surname and christian name, with full address. On the right hand side are initials indicating to which federated institute he or she belonged: M. C., Midland Counties Institution of Engineers; M. G., Manchester Geological and Mining Society; M. I., Midland Institute of Mining Engineers; N. E., North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers; N. S., North Staffordshire Institute of Mining Engineers; S. | Metropolitan-Vickers Ex-Apprentices and Ex-Trainees

The third edition of 'A Register of Ex-Apprentices and Ex-Trainees of the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company Limited' was published in 1950. It contains 10,219 names of those who had been trained at Trafford Park, Manchester, between 1902 and the end of 1949. The compilation was based on the second edition (published in 1939) augmented by the answers to questionnaires, responded to by 74% of those included. Addresses for another 12% were updated. The entries are arranged alphabetically by surname (in capitals and bold) and forename. Then the period at Vickers (e. g., 46-48 for 1946 to 1948); year of birth; then highest career level within the company; and if removed to another company, the name of that (in bold) with year of joining. There are sections for any scholarship, war service, and present address, as of 1950. Names of the deceased are printed in italics.
In bold on the left hand side of each entry there is one or more of these abbreviations: C, College Apprentice; E, Special Trainee; k, Killed on Active Service, O. H. M. S.; Ls, Member, M-V. Long Service Association; o, Member, M-V.
