'The Census of Morning and Evening Attendance in the Churches and Chapels of London, Sunday, October 24th, 1886' was compiled by The British Weekly, employing several thousand persons, and extended to every denomination and sect, giving the number of attendances in the morning (M.) and in the evening (E.), and the name of the incumbent or priest conducting the service. 1500 churches and chapels were found at worship in the city on that day: 'the enumeration was made by actual counting, official estimate being in no case accepted when unconfirmed'. The census covered Kensington, Fulham, Chelsea, St George Hanover Square, Westminster, Marylebone, Hampstead, St Pancras, Islington, Hackney, St Giles, Strand, Holborn, London City, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, St George-in-the-East, Stepney, Mile-end and Poplar in Middlesex; St Saviour Southwark, St Olave Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Camberwell in Surrey; and Greenwich, Lewisham, and Woolwich in Kent. These 29 registration districts comprised a population of about 4,100,000. About half a million attended morning service on that day; 269,799 Anglicans, 142,425 Congregationalists, and relatively smaller numbers for other denominations.

| Boys entering Giggleswick School

The school at Giggleswick in the West Riding of Yorkshire dates from at least 1507, but no register of the boys attending there has survived earlier than one started by the headmaster, the reverend George Style, in 1875. When the bursar, H. L. Mullins, prepared this, 'The Giggleswick School Register', printed in 1913, he was able to compile general details of some scholars from earlier years, but the concerted, reasonably complete, account starts in 1859. The details are arranged by term of entry, then alphabetically by surname and christian name. Typically each description gives full name; date of birth; name and address of father; date of leaving. Where known, Mullins then added a brief career synopsis, present address in 1913, or date of death. From 1869 onwards boarders were admitted to the school, and where it is known that a boy was a day scholar, the word (Town) is added after his name.MOINET. The Oxford University Calendar for 1931 includes this list of all living members of the university, i. e. not only undergraduates and members of staff, but also all surviving graduates from earlier generations. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname, then by college in order of foundation. Surnames are given, initials, highest degree, name of college, and then the year of graduating the first degree. For undergraduates only name and college is given. An asterisk before a surname indicates a member on the foundation of the college. There are separate lists for men and women. In the women's list italic type indicates the maiden names under which married women were first registered as women students in the university: both maiden and married surnames are included in our index.MOINET. The Institution of Electrical Engineers was founded in 1871 under the name of The Society of Telegraph Engineers, and incorporated by royal charter in 1921. The list of members, corrected to 1 September 1939, gives the names and addresses of the various grades of members. Members (M. I. E. E.) and Associate Members (A. M. I. E. E.) were entitled to describe themselves as Chartered Electrical Engineers. Then there are the Associates (Associate I. E. E.), Companions (Companion I. E. E.), Graduates (Graduate I. E. E.) and Students (Student I. E. E.). The names are given in bold, surname first; before each name is the year of attaining that grade; and for the higher grades the year of each lower grade is also given, e. g. (G. 1931).MOINET. | London Telephone Subscribers

The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).MOINET.
