| News from Congregational and Independent churches
(1855)
The Congregational and a number of other independent churches together formed the Evangelical Alliance, committed to promoting and supporting missions to the heathen. The areas chosen for their projects were Guiana, South Africa, India, the South Seas and China. The work of the missionaries was not only in preaching the Gospel, but also in translating the Bible into local languages, and establishing churches, schools and orphanages. Orphans and native teachers were often given the names of principal contributors or congregations back in Britain. In Britain the large amounts of money needed for this work were raised among the Congregational and independent congregations, arranged by auxiliaries for each county (although some contributions for each county might in fact come in from congregations and individuals in neighbouring areas); money was gathered by ministers, at special services, by supporters, and in missionary boxes. The accounts of all these contributions were published as part of a monthly magazine called the Evangelical Magazine. Each issue of the magazine carried obituaries of prominent members of the congregations; general articles on religion; reviews of newly-published religious books; home news, mainly about meetings of importance or interest by the alliance or in individual churches; and then a separate section called the Missionary Chronicle. The Missionary Chronicle was devoted to letters and reports from the missionaries; and concludes with a set of accounts of donations towards the missionary work. | Newcastle-upon-Tyne Voters: Householders in All Saints

In the general election of April 1859 the candidates for Newcastle-upon-Tyne the candidates were Thomas Emerson Headlam (H), George Ridley (R) and P. A. Taylor (T); the following June a poll was held to choose the Judge-Advocate General, the candidates being the Right Hon. T. E. Headlam (H) and William Cuthbert (C). This poll book lists all the voters, giving full name and address, and votes cast. The book is divided into two sections: freemen and householders. Within the householder section the names are arranged by parish or township: All Saints, Byker, Elswick, Heaton, Jesmond, St Andrew, St John, St Nicholas, and Westgate.MCWHIRTER. Gun & Co. of 17 Charlotte Street, and later of 6 Prince of Wales' Road, London, in about 1866 published this second 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. | Science Schools and Classes: Honours and Advanced Examinations: Class Lists

The Science and Art Department of the Committee of Council on Education published these class lists giving the names of all the successful candidates in the examination of science schools and classes taken in May 1869. The candidates were of three levels: honours; second stage or advanced examination; third stage or elementary examination. Twenty-three subjects were offered. These are the lists for the honours and advanced examinations. The tables, arranged subject by subject, give the candidate's full name (surname first), age, and occupation - or, in the case of those not yet of working age, father's occupation, preceded by (f.); the name of the school where the candidate was taught the subject; and the name of the teacher. Many candidates sat and were successful in more than one subject, and so appear in more than one list. The subjects are: I. Practical, Plane and Solid Geometry; II. Machine Construction; III. Building Construction; IV. Elementary Mathematics; V. Higher Mathematics; VI. Theoretical Mechanics; VII. Applied Mechanics; VIII. Acoustics, Light, and Heat: IX. Magnetism and Electricity; X. This is the class list (in order of merit) of the men who took that examination at Christmas 1875, and who were awarded Second Class results. The first column gives the position in the exam results (no number is inserted where the candidate obtained the same marks as the last to whose name a number is prefixed); then there is the candidate's name (surname first); school in which engaged (C. of S. or G. A. for schools connected with the General Assembly of the Established Church of Scotland, F. C. Free Church of Scotland, Epis. Episcopal Church of Scotland, R. Roman Catholic, Sessl. The number in the first column shows order of merit in each class in the examination; then there is the name of the candidate (surname, christian name and any intermediate initial(s)), the school in which engaged, and the training college at which examined. The names of pupil teachers are shown in italics, with the 'school in which engaged' column left blank.
