 Outstanding soldiers of the 19th regiment of Foot
(1860-1870)
The 19th (The 1st Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment of Foot was in two battalions. The 1st battalion fought in the Crimea, and in 1857 were moved to Bengal. The battalion depot was at Chatham. In 1868 the battalion took part in the Black Mountain Expedition. The second battalion was raised in 1858, and was at Aldershot in 1860: in 1863 it embarked for India. Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. Soldiers of the 1st battalion, Manchester Regiment, fighting in Egypt

The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 1st battalion, The Manchester Regiment, had been sent from Ireland to the East Indies in 1870, and took part in the Afghan War of 1879 to 1880. In early 1882 the regiment was transferred to Egypt, where it took part in the campaign of that year, gaining the Egypt 1882 honour for the regimental colours, but before the end of the year was returned to England: this roll was compiled at Warley Barracks in March 1883.MCGUCKIN.
