Massachusetts Criminals, Litigants, Lawyers and Jurors (1673-1692) The only surviving complete volume of the records of the courts held by the Governor and Assistants of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay is for the period 1673 to 1692. It was transcribed by John Noble, and published by order of the Board of Aldermen of the City of Boston, New England, as County Commissioners of the County of Suffolk, Massachusetts. Under English law overseas colonies were generally deemed to fall under the jurisdiction of the Admiralty, and were subject to English law varied by local circumstances. These Courts of Assistants therefore also function as Courts of Admiralty; the courts had jurisiction over criminal cases and also in civil disputes between parties. In practice, many of the names that occur in the record are just those of the members of the grand jury and the lesser juries (appointed from among the adult male householders of the colony) before whom the cases were tried. Apprentices registered in Kent (1793) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Subscribers to Thomas Sanderson's Original Poems: Tunbridge (1800) Thomas Sanderson's 'Original Poems' was published in Carlisle in 1800. The list of subscribers is arranged geographically: London; Tunbridge; Gloucester; Epsom; Exeter; Nottingham; Northampton; Cambridge; Oxford; Hertford; Carlisle; Penrith; Longtown; Hesket Newmarket; Wigton; Keswick; Durham; Newcastle; Maryport; Dublin; Edinburgh; York; and Liverpool, each including surrounding areas; Madras; and the West Indies. Where more than one copy was ordered, the number is given after the subscriber's name. At the foot of the list is this note: 'The Author cannot take leave of his friends without warmly thanking them for the generous encouragement they have given to the subscription. Their benevolence does them the more honour, as it was called forth in the favour of a Person who cannot make them any better return than mere professions of gratitude.' STARNES. Cost: £4.00. Masters of apprentices and clerks (1805-1811) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 15 January 1805 to 31 January 1811. Agriculturalists in southern England (1823) 'A Natural and Chymical Treatise of Agriculture, from the Works of Count Gustavus Adolphus Gyllenborg; with Practical Remarks and Additions: by W. Pilkinton, Land Surveyor, Valuer of Estates, and Late Secretary to the East Devon Agricultural Society', was published in Banbury in 1823, having been subscribed to in advance by over 2000 farmers and gentlemen, mainly from the southern counties, doubtless anxious to discover the secrets of Gyllenborg's new techniques for improving crop yields. Agriculturists and horticulturists (1830) J. Baxter of Lewes, proprietor of the Sussex Agricultural Press, published a compendium called 'The Library of Agricultural and Horticultural Knowledge; with an Appendix on Suspended Animation, Poisons, and the Principal Laws relating to Farming and Rural Affairs'. This was supported by a large subscription of interested gentlemen, farmers and gardeners, whose names and addresses are indexed here.
