England and Venice (1642-1643) The Master of the Rolls directed the compilation of translations of archives from northern Italy relating to English affairs. This volume, edited by Allen B. Hinds and published in 1925, is partly based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the state archives housed in the Frari at Venice, and partly taken directly from the originals, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Much of this volume, covering March 1642 to July 1643, consists of the letters of Giovanni Giustinian the Venetian ambassador in England, and of Gerolamo Agostini, the Venetian secretary there; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain and northern Europe as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean, and these too are mentioned from time to time. SAVIL. Cost: £4.00. London Marriage Allegations (1611-1660) London, Essex and part of Hertfordshire lay within the diocese of London. In the later 17th century the individual archdeaconry courts issued marriage licences, but for this period the only surviving material is from the overarching London Consistory court. The main series of marriage allegations from the consistory court was extracted by Colonel Joseph Lemuel Chester, and the text was edited by George J. Armytage and published by the Harleian Society in 1887. A typical later entry will give date; name, address and occupation of groom; name, address and condition of his intended bride, and/or, where she is a spinster, her father's name, address and occupation. Lastly we have the name of the church where the wedding was going to take place. For the later years Colonel Chester merely picked out items that he thought were of interest, and his selections continue as late as 1828, but the bulk of the licences abstracted here are from the 17th century. Apprentices registered at Colchester (1765) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Durham return. Inhabitants of Easingwold in the North Riding of Yorkshire (1790-1797) The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Hull). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797. SAVIL. Abbots Bromley Directory (1818) The Staffordshire General and Commercial Directory was published by W. Parson and T. Bradshaw in 1818 in sections, 8 to 19 relating to towns in the centre of the county: 8. Abbots Bromley; 9. Burton-upon-Trent; 10. Cheadle; 11. Eccleshall; 12. Lichfield; 13. Longnor; 14. Penkridge; 15. Rugeley; 16. Stafford; 17. Stone; 18. Tamworth; 19. Uttoxeter. In each section the traders are listed alphabetically under surname, with occupation and address. SAVIL. Cost: £4.00. Hertfordshire Sessions (1699-1850) Incidents from the Hertfordshire Sessions Rolls. These cover a wide range of criminal and civil business for the county, with presentments, petitions, and recognizances to appear as witnesses: many of the records concern the county authorities dealing with regulation of alehouses, religious conventicles, absence from church, highways, poaching, profanation of the Sabbath, exercising trades without due apprenticeship &c. Unlike the Sessions Books, the decisions of the justices are not recorded on the rolls, which serve more as a record of evidence and allegations. This is a calendar of abstracts of extracts: it is by no means a completely comprehensive record of the surviving Hertfordshire sessions rolls of the period, but coverage is good. SAVIL. Cost: £4.00.
