Apprentices registered in Devon (1801) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Voters in the Parish of St George, Hanover Square, Westminster (1837) A poll was taken 26 July 1837 for the election of two members to represent the City of Westminster in Parliament. The candidates were Lieut.-Col. de Lacey Evans, John Temple Leader, and Gen. the Right Hon. sir George Murray, K. G. C. This poll book lists the electors with full name (surname first) and address (in italics), dashes indicating for whom they cast their votes. The names are listed alphabetically by first letter of surname, arranged in the eight parishes of Westminster, plus the extra-parochial Precincts of the Savoy. MANICOM. Cost: £6.00. Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 21: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises South St. (East side), Ann St. (North side), Anns Row, Thurlow Place to Ann St., Aylesbury St. (both sides), Hen & Chicken Lane from the Hen & Chickens to East St. (both sides) Including James Place, and Victory Place, South side of East St. from Hen & Chicken Lane to Parish boundary, Surrey Square, Including Claremont Place and Crawleys Cottages." This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. HO 107/1567. Civil Service Appointments (1855-1857) The Civil Service Commission published this annual list of all persons who had obtained certificates of qualification for appointment in the various public departments. The list gives full name (surname first); department (such as Post Office, or Inland Revenue); situation (such as Letter-carrier, or Clerk); and date of certificate. Candidates whose names are preceded by a dagger obtained appointments as the result of competition. Those whose names are preceded by an asterisk obtained honorary additions to their certificates either for proficiency in extra subjects chosen by themselves, or for marked proficiency in the prescribed subjects.
