London Inquisitions Post Mortem
(1577-1603)
Full and complete abstracts of inquisitions post mortem for the City of London in this period. These are inquiries as to the real estate and heir of each person holding in capite or in chief, i. e. directly, from the Crown. The precise date of death of the deceased and the age and relationship of the heir are usually recorded. This index covers all names mentioned, including jurors, tenants, &c. Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. Because of the delay before some collectors made their returns, this register includes indentures and articles from as early as 1719. Members of London livery companies

One of the most useful sections of the Universal British Directory, nominally produced in 1791 but including later material, is a List of the Livery of London, giving the names and addresses of members of the London livery companies, together with their professions. As a glance at the sample will show, the companies and the professions only sometimes match, so this is an invaluable key as a first step in tracing the relevant company records for a London trader of this periodHIPWORTH. Petitioning Creditors and Solicitors
(1828-1829)
Principal creditors petitioning to force a bankruptcy (but often close relatives of the bankrupt helping to protect his assets). Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette was printed monthly for subscribers only, and included a section entitled Bankrupts, summarizing notices of bankruptcy proceedings. Volume 4, for 1829, covers bankruptcies gazetted from 2 December 1828 to 24 November 1829. The Gazette provided an index to the names of the principal bankrupts, but we have prepared this index to the names of the principal creditors, together with some stray names and solicitors from the records.

Grenadier Guards fighting in Egypt
(1882)
The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 2nd battalion, Grenadier Guards, took part in the 1882 campaign, including the battle of Tel-el-Kebir, and returned to England by the end of the year; the Egypt medals were distributed in December 1882, and the Khedive Star roll was compiled at Wellington Barracks in March 1883.HIPWORTH.
