Masters of Apprentices registered at Chester (1728-1731) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. Isle of Wight Electors: Ryde: for Cochrane (1870) 'Poll Book at the Election of a Knight of the Shire for the County of the Isle of Wight taken on the 10th day of June, 1870. Candidates: - George Moffatt, Esq. and Baillie Cochrane, Esq.' The electors are listed by polling district (Newport, Ryde, Ventnor, West Cowes and Yarmouth), in three categories - those who voted for Moffatt, those for Cochrane, and those unpolled - giving full name and place of abode. Trainee Schoolmasters (Church of England) (1878) The Education Department set examinations of trainee teachers at the various training colleges in Britain. The sample scan is from the examination class lists, together with which were also printed lists of Queen's Scholars. First class scholarships of £17, with a personal allowance of £3, were awarded to pupil teachers and others for their teacher training. The scholarship lists are arranged in order of merit, with full names (surname first), and the name of the school at which the candidate was teaching. Cases in Chancery (1883-1884) Volume 76 of The Law Times, 'The Journal of The Law and The Lawyers', a weekly publication, runs from 3 November 1883 to 26 April 1884. Much of the journal is taken up with law reports, leading articles, &c., and the 'Solicitors' Department' contains several regular features of great interest. The court lists enable us to follow the progress of cases scheduled to be heard in the high courts. Many of these cases never actually came to be heard, litigation ceasing whilst in preparation, or being resolved 'at the door of the court'. In almost all cases the parties are referred to by surname only. The very extensive lists of cases pending for trial or hearing in the Chancery Division are arranged by the justice appointed, and then sub-divided into categories such as 'Causes for Trial with Witnesses', 'Further Consideration', 'Demurrer', 'Non-witness Causes, Adjourned Summonses, and Special Cases.'
