His Royal Highness prince Ernest Augustus, fifth son of his Majesty king George III, was born 5 June 1771, and created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale and Earl of Armagh in 1799. His official seat was at Kew Green, his town residence being at Ambassador's Court, St James's. Officials of his household are listed in Holden's Triennial Directory of 1805 to 1807.BROTHERSON. His Royal Highness prince Edward, born in 1767 third son of his Majesty king George III, was created Duke of Kent and Strathern and Earl of Dublin in 1799. He died in 1820: his elder brother George (Augustus Frederick) became king George IV, but died childless in 1830; the next son, William (Henry), succeeded as king William IV, but died childless in 1837: and so the Duke of Kent's only child, a daughter, princess Alexandrina Victoria, succeeded to the throne as queen Victoria. | British Guiana Slave Owners (1838)
Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire by act of Parliament in 1833. This list, published in 1838, gives details of compensation paid to owners who had suffered by the emancipation of their slaves after abolition. The table gives the date of the award, the number of the claim, the full name of the party to whom payment was awarded, the number of slaves, and the sum paid. Some masters had owned more than 100 slaves; most of the claimants had only a few. The cost of the loss of a single slave was generally assessed here at as much as £63. There were 2668 claims from British Guiana, including some that were abandoned, disallowed, or still unsettled because of litigation.

|  Merchant Seamen
(1840-1844)
The Registry of Merchant Seamen, including fishermen, sought to identify individuals securely in this series of registers by assigning to each man a unique number, grouped together by surname, and then by christian name, whereas in previous registers names had been jumbled together under the first two letters of the surname. Each man's age and birthplace was recorded, together with any number brought forwards from previous registration, i. e. the number assigned to the man in the registers for 1835 to 1840. Then each voyage is listed, with his status (e. g. S for seaman, M for mate, &c.) on that trip, the identification number of the ship, the date, and then the name of the ship. In the event of it becoming known that a man had died during the course of a voyage, that information is written across the remaining empty columns.
