Proprietors of Herefordshire Banking Company (1838) The provincial banks of England and Wales made annual returns to the Stamp Office of their proprietors or shareholders. These returns, registered in March 1838, from the 103 banks then in existence, contain the full names and addresses of about 30,000 shareholders. BIRTS. Cost: £6.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
British merchant seamen (1835-1840) At this period, the foreign trade of ships plying to and from the British isles involved about 150,000 men on 15,000 ships; and the coasting trade about a quarter as many more. A large proportion of the seamen on these ships were British subjects, and so liable to be pressed for service in the Royal Navy; but there was no general register by which to identify them, so in 1835 parliament passed a Merchant Seamen's Registration Bill. Under this act a large register of British seamen was compiled, based on ships' crew lists gathered in British and Irish ports, and passed up to the registry in London. A parliamentary committee decided that the system devised did not answer the original problem, and the original register was abandoned after less than two years: the system was then restarted in this form, with a systematic attempt to attribute the seamen's (ticket) numbers, and to record successive voyages. The register records the number assigned to each man; his name; age; birthplace; quality (S = seaman, &c.); and the name and official number of his ship, with the date of the crew list (usually at the end of a voyage). Most of the men recorded were born in the British Isles, but not all. The system was still very cumbersome, because the names were amassed merely under the first two letters of surname; an attempt was made to separate out namesakes by giving the first instance of a name (a), the second (b), and so on. During 1840 this series of ledgers was abandoned, and a new set started with names grouped together by surname. BT 112/6 BIRTS. Cost: £8.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 7: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises Grosvenor Park (North & South) Includings Huts on Common, South Terrace, South side of Grosvenor St., and West side of Walworth Road to Parish boundary. Boundary Lane & Bolingbroke Row on the East side of Walworth Road to the Turnpike". HO 107/1567. This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 44 Grosvenor Park North; Oliver Cottage; 1 to 4 Grosvenor Park Terrace; Red Garden Cottage, Lorrimore Common; 1 and 2 Lorrimore Common; Temperance Cottage, Windmill Lane; 5 to 38 Grosvenor Park South; 1 to 13 South Terrace, Grosvenor Park; Gardeners Cottage; 4 to 12 (including Lupton Cottage, 5) and 21 to 23 Grosvenor Street South; 1 to 4 White Cottage, Grosvenor Street; 6 to 18 Grosvenor Place, Walworth Road; 1 to 3 Bolingbroke Cottage, Boundary Row; Pilgrim Cottage, 21 Boundary Row; 1 to 3 Pilgrim Place, Boundary Row; 4 Vine Cottage; Omnibus(s) Yard; 5, Milk House, Boundary Row; 1 to 4 Elizabeth Place, Boundary Row; 1 to 26 Bolingbroke Row, Walworth; and Gurneys Stables. Baptists (1871) The Baptist Messenger was produced monthly. The material indexed is mainly the Denominational Intelligence, i. e. the doings of the Baptist churches in Britain and Ireland, including summary lists of baptisms naming only the ministers. In fact, this listing is a little more comprehensive than the main directory, in that it includes residents of some London suburbs that, although in the county of Surrey, are not included in the Surrey directory.
