The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 11: described as: "Saint George's Circus No 7 (Langs) to No 96 Blackfriars Road and the Magdalen Hospital - Wirtemberg Place - Valentine Place (both sides) - Angel Place to railing - Pontipool Pl - and both sides of Gray Street." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 7 Saint Georges Circus, 96 to 124 Blackfriars Road (including Magdalen Hospital), 3 to 10 Wirtemburgh (sic) Place, 1 to 35 Valentine Place, 1 to 7 Pontipool Place, 1 to 29 Angel Place, and 2 to 41 Grey (sic) Street (including John O Groates). The unmarried housemaids in the Magdalen Hospital for the Reception, Maintenance and Employment of Penitent Females are only identified by initials, and so are not covered by this index.ROUNTREE. Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain: Associates: Major Examination
(1856)
The membership list of the Pharmaceutical Society was divided into London Members; Country Members; Foreign Life Members; Associates admitted before 1 July 1842; Associates who have passed the Major Examination; and Associates who have passed the Minor Examination. In each case the lists give year of admission; number of certificate (where appropriate); name (surname first, christian name and initials); and address (house number and street name in London, merely town of residence elsewhere). An asterisk before the surname indicates a life member (except in the list of Foreign Life Members). There is also a list of registered apprentices: in this list we have year of registration, full name (surname first); master's name (in the form 'residing with Mr. Smith') and town.ROUNTREE. Civil Service Appointments
(1862)
The Civil Service Commission published an annual list of all persons who had obtained certificates of qualification for appointment in the various public departments. The list gives full name (surname first); department (such as Post Office, or Inland Revenue); situation (such as Letter-carrier, or Clerk); and date of certificate. Candidates whose names are preceded by a dagger obtained appointments as the result of competition; a double dagger indicates open competition. Those whose names are preceded by an asterisk obtained honorary additions to their certificates either for proficiency in extra subjects chosen by themselves, or for marked proficiency in the prescribed subjects. Then follows a further list of these candidates who had obtained Honorary Additions to their Certificates in this way: giving name (surname and initials); position in the service (department and situation); subjects for which honorary additions were made; and 'extent of knowledge displayed' (such as Creditable, Fair, or Very Creditable). 1 January to 31 December 1862.ROUNTREE.
