The Chinese Repository for 1845 contains this alphabetical list of foreign residents in China, giving name (surname and christian name or initials) sometimes with the addition '& fam[ily]', and italic abbreviations showing nationality (such as br for British, por for Portuguese, &c.), and where resident - a for Amoy, c for Canton, f for Fuchau, h for Hongkong, m for Macao, n for Ningpo, or s for Shanghai. ab means absent, and 'in several instances the place of residence cannot be determined'.FARNCOMB. Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of insolvencies and stages in the process whereby the insolvents petitioned for release from debtors' prison. £121,255,374 0s 8d was promised by about 8,000 subscribers of more than £2,000 to the nearly 556 railway bills deposited in the Private Bill Office during the Session of Parliament for 1846. This alphabetical list gives the full names of the subscribers (surname first), description (i. e., occupation), place of abode, a numerical reference to the title of the railway, the amount subscribed to each, and total. Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of assignees of bankrupts' estates. Each entry gives the name of the bankrupt (surname first, in capitals), and trade; followed by the names, addresses and trades of the assignees to whom the estate was delivered. | Manufacturers and Traders Petitioning the Mint
(1848)
This memorial of Manufacturers and Traders, mainly of London and Edinburgh, was presented to the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury, expressing 'their grateful satisfaction at the course pursued by your Lordships in regard to the Chinese treasure received as the ransom of Canton, whereby the gold contained in the Sycee silver and dollars was extracted at the Royal Mint and made beneficial to British interests', and urging that 'a similar refinement of the treasure since paid, or hereafter to be paid, as an indemnity by the Chinese, may be adopted, and that the price usually allowed in the London market for refining may be realized at once among British manufacturers, tradesmen, and artisans, before the bullion shall be sold to serve as a remittance either now or hereafter to foreign countries.' The petition is undated; was produced in evidence to a royal commission in 1848; and refers to the ransom of Canton, arising from the Treaty of Nanking 29 August 1842.FARNCOMB. The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 1: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises the West side of the Walworth Road, from West St. to Manor Place, the South side of Manor Place, East side of Canterbury Place, North side of West St., Lorrimore Terrace, Manor Terrace, Cottages in the Fields, Manor St., and South Terrace Lorrimore Road". This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 13 Canterbury Place; 1 to 31 Manor Place (including Wooden Cottage and Warner Cottage); 1 to 28 Penton Row (including Manor Cottage, Walworth Road); 1 to 22 West Street; 1 to 15 Harford Place; 1 to 12 Lorrimore Terrace; 1 to 20 Manor Terrace; cottages on Lorrimore Common (including Lorrimore Cottage and Coates's Cottage); 1 to 6 Manor Road; and 1 to 10 South Terrace. The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.FARNCOMB.
