Incidents from the Hertfordshire Sessions Rolls. These cover a wide range of criminal and civil business for the county, with presentments, petitions, and recognizances to appear as witnesses: many of the records concern the county authorities dealing with regulation of alehouses, religious conventicles, absence from church, highways, poaching, profanation of the Sabbath, exercising trades without due apprenticeship &c. Unlike the Sessions Books, the decisions of the justices are not recorded on the rolls, which serve more as a record of evidence and allegations. This is a calendar of abstracts of extracts: it is by no means a completely comprehensive record of the surviving Hertfordshire sessions rolls of the period, but coverage is good. DOWTON. The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 2: described as: "Southwark Bridge Road commencing at Union Place, then Stanhope Place - Chester Terrace - both sides of Great Union Street to Nicholl's (baker) inclusive - British & Foreign School to Grosvenor Place, inclusive - Market Street (left hand) to Earl Street - Bond Street (both sides) - Mansfield Street & Pen Factory - Earl Street (both sides) and Earl Court." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 142 to 153 Southwark Bridge Road (including Stanhope Place), 2 to 15 Chester Terrace, 20 to 45 Great Union Street, the British and Foreign School, 2 to 5 Grosvenor Place, 1 to 21 Earl Street (including the Wesleyan Association building), 1 to 6 Earl Court, 1 to 34 Bond Street, 1 and 2 Mansfield Street (including the Pen Factory) and 1 to 16 Market Street. The management of the Crystal Palace, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851, was restructured by a Deed of Settlement in 1852, and then incorporated as the Crystal Palace Company by royal charter in January 1853. The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.DOWTON. The poll book of the county of Dorset for the general election of 3 April 1857 lists all the actual voters: the first column gives the man's number on the electoral register; then the voter's name in full (surname first); residence; qualification (C. for Copyhold, F. for Freehold, L. for Leasehold, O. for Occupier), and then 1s for the votes cast (Se for Henry Ker Seymer, F for Mr Floyer, St for Henry G Sturt, P for William H Berkley Portman).DOWTON.
