The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 14: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises The East side of Portland St. from Clandon St. to Trafalgar St, South side of Trafalgar St. from Portland St. to South St., & West side of South St. from Trafalgar St. to Clandon St., Including Burton St. (both sides), Ewhurst St. (both sides) from Clandon St. to the end, Ewhurst Court, Webb St. (both sides), Hope St., Dykes Cottages, Thornton Place, Ebenezer St. (both sides) & Elizabeth Place". This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. HO 107/1567. Non-conformist schoolmasters aged under 35 passing certificate papers
(1855)
The Committee of Council on Education for England and Wales produced an annual report which included several lists of teachers and trainee teachers, including an Annual Calendar of Teachers who have Obtained Certificates of Merit (completed to 1 January 1856), from which this sample scan is taken. Then followed class lists for students as at Christmas 1855 in the training schools, arranged by second and first year, and within each year into first, second and third division. Full names are given, surname first. D. indicates that the student had been awarded a Certificate of Competency in Drawing. Similar lists are next given for teachers in elementary schools, assessed into divisions, and arranged by denomination, and within denomination by age (over or under 35), or whether previously certified and passing papers for the second or third year.COMBS. The management of the Crystal Palace, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851, was restructured by a Deed of Settlement in 1852, and then incorporated as the Crystal Palace Company by royal charter in January 1853. The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.COMBS.
