Foreign Residents in China (1845) The Chinese Repository for 1845 contains this alphabetical list of foreign residents in China, giving name (surname and christian name or initials) sometimes with the addition '& fam[ily]', and italic abbreviations showing nationality (such as br for British, por for Portuguese, &c.), and where resident - a for Amoy, c for Canton, f for Fuchau, h for Hongkong, m for Macao, n for Ningpo, or s for Shanghai. ab means absent, and 'in several instances the place of residence cannot be determined'. Railway Subscription Contracts (1845) Ł21,386,703 6s 4d was promised by about 10,000 subscribers of less than Ł2,000 per contract to the nearly 200 railway bills deposited in the Private Bill Office during the Session of Parliament for 1845. This alphabetical list gives the full names of the subscribers (surname first), description (i. e., occupation), place of abode, a numerical reference to the title of the railway, the amount subscribed to each, and total. Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 2: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises Both sides of the Lorrimore Road, Bridge Cottages, Bridge Place, West St. (south side), Including Cottage Grove, West side of Walworth Road from West St to Carter St., Carter St. (both sides) including Walworth House". This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 8 Octavius Terrace; 1 to 7 Sutherland Terrace; 2 and 4 St Georges Terrace; 1 and 7 to 11 Onslow Terrace; 2 to 8 Margaret Terrace; cottages on Lorrimore Road (including Ivey Cottage and Flora Cottage); 1 to 11 Anns Terrace; 1 to 5 Bridge Cottages; 1 to 3 Bridge Place; Field Cottage, Edina Cottage, Sylvan Cottage and Grove Cottage in West Street; 1 to 9 Cottage Grove; Harford Cottage, West Street; 2 to 10 Cottage Place; Elizabeth Cottage, West Street; 1 to 11 West Street; 1 to 17 Keens Row; 1 to 43 Carter Street; and Walworth House. Inhabitants of Southwark in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 13: described as: "Johnston's Buildings - Obelisk Yard - Waterloo Road (east side) to Munroe's, end of Parish (West side) commencing at the Cabinet Maker's corner of Whiting St to Procters, end of Road - Duke St (north side) from Locksmith's to No 49 and Bale's Court." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. Masters of Merchantmen (1852-1853) Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping was issued annually, listing ships that had been surveyed preparatory to being insured. This is the register issued 1 July 1852 and then annotated as ships were re-surveyed through to 30 June 1853. The ships were numbered by the first letter of their name, and then by number alphabetically through the ships' names and within ships of the same name alphabetically by surname of the master. After the name of the ship there is the type of vessel (Bk, barque; Bg, brig; Bn, brigantine; Cr, cutter; Dr, dogger; G, galliott; H, hoy; K, ketch; Lr, lugger; Pol, polacre; S, ship; Sk, smack; Sp, sloop; Sr, schooner; St, schoot; Stm, steamer; Sw, snow; Yt, yacht), master's name (as at the time of the last survey); tonnage; place and year of build; owners; port belonging to; destined voyage; number of years first assigned; and character for hull and stores (e. g., A 1), with the year or month (e. g., 50 for 1850, or 2 for February 1852) of inspection. Underneath some entries details were given of construction and repair, with year - s., sheathed; d., doubled; C., coppered; I. B., iron bolts; c. f., copper fastened; M., sheathed with marine metal; Y. M., sheathed with yellow metal; G., sheathed with galvanised iron; Z., sheathed with zinc; F., felt; C. lm., coppered to light water or ballast mark; C. T., copper bolts substituted for treenails; Cl., clincher; len., lengthened; lrp., large repairs; trp., thorough repairs; Drp., damage repaired; ND., new deck; N TSds., new top-sides; W. The sample scan is from the main list. The third column, reserved for masters' names, is not particularly wide; with short surnames, an initial will be given; but longer surnames omit the initials, and even longer surnames are abbreviated. This is the index to masters in the main list. Often new masters had been appointed by the time of re-survey, and their names are added in slightly smaller type under the original master's names in the third column. These new masters are also included in this index. It should be borne in mind that the masters in the main list are those at the time of the respective previous survey for each ship, not necessarily as of 1 July 1852. BUIST. Cost: £6.00.
