Inhabitants of Suffolk (1568) By Act of Parliament of December 1566 a subsidy of 8d in the £ on moveable goods and 4s in the £ on the annual value of land was raised from the lay (as opposed to clergy) population. Allegations for marriages in southern England (1679-1687) The province or archbishopric of Canterbury covered all England and Wales except for the northern counties in the four dioceses of the archbishopric of York (York, Durham, Chester and Carlisle). Marriage licences were generally issued by the local dioceses, but above them was the jurisdiction of the archbishop, exercised through his vicar-general. Where the prospective bride and groom were from different dioceses it would be expected that they obtain a licence from the archbishop; in practice, the archbishop residing at Lambeth, and the actual offices of the province being in London, which was itself split into myriad ecclesiastical jurisdictions, and spilled into adjoining dioceses, this facility was particularly resorted to by couples from London and the home counties, although there are quite a few entries referring to parties from further afield. The abstracts of the allegations given here usually state name, address (street in London, or parish), age, and condition of bride and groom; and sometimes the name, address and occupation of the friend or relative filing the occupation. Where parental consent was necessary, a mother's or father's name may be given. The ages shown should be treated with caution; ages above 21 tended to be reduced, doubtless for cosmetic reasons; ages under 21 tended to be increased, particularly to avoid requiring parental consent; a simple statement 'aged 21' may merely mean 'of full age' and indicate any age from 21 upwards. These are merely allegations to obtain licences; although nearly all will have resulted in the issuing of the licence, many licences did not then result in marriage. HYNDES. Cost: £4.00. Apprentices registered in Sudbury (1768) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Salop return. Members of London livery companies (1791-1797) One of the most useful sections of the Universal British Directory, nominally produced in 1791 but including later material, is a List of the Livery of London, giving the names and addresses of members of the London livery companies, together with their professions. As a glance at the sample will show, the companies and the professions only sometimes match, so this is an invaluable key as a first step in tracing the relevant company records for a London trader of this period HYNDES. Inhabitants of New South Wales (1836) The Convicts' Office of New South Wales issued these lists of inhabitants to whom male convicts had been assigned to work as servants or farm workers. The list gives each inhabitant's surname, christian name (or rank), address, and number of convicts and for what work. February 1836. HYNDES. Cost: £6.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 14: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises The East side of Portland St. from Clandon St. to Trafalgar St, South side of Trafalgar St. from Portland St. to South St., & West side of South St. from Trafalgar St. to Clandon St., Including Burton St. (both sides), Ewhurst St. (both sides) from Clandon St. to the end, Ewhurst Court, Webb St. (both sides), Hope St., Dykes Cottages, Thornton Place, Ebenezer St. (both sides) & Elizabeth Place". This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. HO 107/1567. Men of the 65th Regiment who fought in the New Zealand War (1865-1870) New Zealand War Medal roll for the 65th (2nd Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment of Foot: for service in the New Zealand campaign 1865 to 1867: the rolls were compiled following a general order in 1869 and the medals were distributed in 1870.
