Gentry in London (1856) The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well. Members of the Association for Promoting the Extension of The Contagious Diseases Act, in London (1869) The Contagious Diseases Act of 1866 had as its first objective the establishment of isolation hospitals for the treatment of soldiers and sailors afflicted with smallpox, typhoid, measles, chicken pox, malaria, scarlet fever, bubonic plague, dysentery, enteric fever and other infectious conditions. This association was formed to lobby for the extension of the Act to the civil population of the United Kingdom. The membership was drawn not just from the medical profession and those interested in the administration of the poor law, but also from concerned individuals throughout society. Boys entering Wellington College in Berkshire (1879) Wellington College, near Wokingham, was originally founded for the education of sons of military officers. A register of boys entering the school from First Term 1859 to Michaelmas 1933 was compiled by F. G. Lawrence for the Old Wellingtonian Society. In each entry the boy's name is given in full, in bold, surname first; age at entry (usually 11 to 14); then, in brackets, the name of the dormitory or house to which he belonged, in italics, with the years of his stay; then his father's name (usually surname and initials, but not christian name) with military decorations where appropriate. School prefects and captains are noted as such; if the boy played cricket for the school, XI with the years; academic honours, scholarships, &c.; a brief biography; and date of death, or (where known) address in 1933. Year of marriage is given, and sometimes the wife's name and/or her father's name. Clearly, those boys who kept contact with the school and/or had distinguished military careers have detailed entries; others disappeared into oblivion on leaving. WHICHCORD. Cost: £6.00. Picture Judging Competition Prizewinners (1935) The 'Help Yourself' Society, inaugurated by The Stock Exchange Dramatic & Operatic Society, organized a picture judging competition for their Christmas Charity Fund, 1935. Of the thousands of entries received, 3,377 were awarded prizes, and there were also some consolation prizes. The prize list gives number (in order of merit), name and address. WHICHCORD. Students of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (S. I. Mech. E.) (1947) The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, founded in 1847, was incorporated by royal charter in 1930. The list of members of 1 March 1947 gives the names (surname first) and addresses of the seven classes of member - Honorary Members (Hon. M. I. Mech. E.); Members (M. I. Mech. E.); Associate Members (A. M. I. Mech. E.); Companions (C. I. Mech. E.); Associates (A. I. Mech. E.); Graduates (G. I. Mech. E.); and Students (S. I. Mech. E.). The year of attaining qualification is given in the left-hand margin; in the higher grades the years of achieving the lower grades are also given, bracketed together. The crossed swords symbol indicates naval or military service during the Great War of 1914-1918; an italic b shows a member of the Benevolent Fund. Members of the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers (M. I. H. V. E.) (1958) The Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers was established in 1897. This register, as at 31 March 1958, lists the members alphabetically by surname and initials in the six grades of membership: Honorary Members (Hon. M. I. H. V. E.), Members (M. I. H. V. E.), Associate Members (A. M. I. H. V. E.), Associates (Assoc. I. H. V. E.), Graduates (G. I. H. V. E.), and Students. By each name is the year of attaining that grade of membership; for those in higher grades who passed through lower grades first, the years of entering those lower grades are also given, with M, AM, G and S in italics.
