(1835-1836)
At this period, the foreign trade of ships plying to and from the British isles involved about 150,000 men on 15,000 ships; and the coasting trade about a quarter as many more. A large proportion of the seamen on these ships were British subjects, and so liable to be pressed for service in the Royal Navy; but there was no general register by which to identify them, so in 1835 parliament passed a Merchant Seamen's Registration Bill. Under this act this large register of British seamen was compiled, based on ships' crew lists gathered in British and Irish ports, and passed up to the registry in London. Each seaman was assigned a number, and the names were arranged in the register by first two letters of the surname (our sample scan shows one of the pages for 'Sm'); in addition, an attempt was made to separate out namesakes by giving the first instance of a name (a), the second (b), and so on. But no effective method was devised to prevent the same man being registered twice as he appeared in a second crew list; moreover, the original crew lists were clearly difficult for the registry clerks to copy, and some of the surname spellings appear to be corrupted. A parliamentary committee decided that the system devised did not answer the original problem, and this register was abandoned after less than two years: but it is an apparently comprehensive source for British merchant seamen in 1835 to 1836. The register records the number assigned to each man; his name; age; birthplace; quality (master, captain, mate, 2nd mate, mariner, seaman, fisherman, cook, carpenter, boy &c.); and the name and home port of his ship, with the date of the crew list (usually at the end of a voyage). Most of the men recorded were born in the British Isles, but not all (for instance, Charleston and Stockholm appear in the sample scan). The final column 'How disposed of' is rarely used, and indicates those instances where a man died, was discharged, or deserted his ship during the voyage.SORELL. The New Annual Army List, corrected to 7 February 1840, was published in London by Lieut. H. G. Hart. It lists all serving officers, first of all a list of General and Field Officers by rank from field marshal down to major; and then by regiment, including all ranks down to ensign, with paymasters, adjutants, quarter-masters, surgeons and assistant-surgeons. These lists are all annotated with dates of rank in the army and regiment, and with symbols indicating the officers present at Trafalgar (T), in the Peninsula or the South of France (P), and Waterloo (W). A superscript p indicates that the commission was purchased; an asterisk that it was temporary. The regiments and units are listed in order of precedence: Head Quarters staff; Life Guards; Horse Guards; 7 regiments of Dragoon Guards; 17 regiments of Dragoons; 98 regiments of Foot; the Rifle Brigade; two West India regiments of Foot; Ceylon Rifles; Royal African Colonial Corps; Cape Mounted Rifles; Royal Newfoundland Veterans; Royal Malta Fencibles; Recruiting Staff; Royal Artillery; Royal Engineers; Royal Marines; Commissariat; and the Medical Department. The New Annual Army List, corrected to 7 February 1840, was published in London by Lieut. H. G. Hart. These sections identify those officers who held various British and foreign honours. The lists are annotated with the name of the regiment, &c., and with symbols indicating the officers present in the Peninsula or the South of France (P), and Waterloo (W). The honours covered are Knights Grand Cross of the Bath (GCB); Knights Commanders of the Bath (KCB); Companions of the Bath (CB); Knights Grand Cross of St Michael and St George (GCMG); Knights Commanders of St Michael and St George (KCMG); Companions of St Michael and St George (CMG); Knights Grand Cross of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order (GCH); Knights Commanders of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order (KCH); Knights of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order (KH); and a miscellany of honours from Austria, Bavaria, Belgium, France, Greece, Naples, Netherlands, Persia, Portugal, Prussia, Russia, Sardinia, Saxony, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Tuscany and Wirtemburg.

| Passengers from Bombay to Aden and Suez (1840)
The Honourable East India Company's vessels Atalanta, Berenice, Hugh Lindsay, Victoria and Zenobia made monthly trips to the Red Sea via Aden. Lists of passengers were compiled before setting out from Bombay and registered when the ships reached Suez Roads.

| Mariners' Church Donations: Bedford

Each monthly issue of The Mariners' Church Soldiers' and Sailors' Gospel Temperance Magazine, published by the Temperance British and Foreign Seamen's, Soldiers' and Steamers' Friend Society, and Bethel Flag Union, to promote religious instruction and temperance moral reformation and general unsectarian missions in the British Empire, at home and abroad, contained a section of Acknowledgments of sums contributed by individuals or through the Bethel churches to the society's funds, and in support of the orphan home. The 14th volume of the New Annual Army List, for 1853, corrected to 30 December 1852, was published by Major H. G. Hart of the 49th Regiment. It contained 'the dates of commissions, and a statement of the war services and wounds of nearly every officer in the Army, Ordnance and Marines'. The first section, pages 1 to 111, lists officers of the rank of major and above in order of rank and precedence; officers with local rank (112-114); Yeomen of the Guard (115); the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms (116); Headquarters Staff (117); and then (as in the scan) all the regiments and units in order of precedence, giving any regimental honours, with all the officers by rank, and details of postings, facings and agents (118-336). A long section (337-426) then lists officers on the retired full pay and half-pay, including the Royal Regiment of Artillery, Corps of Royal Engineers, Royal Marines and military departments. Then there are lists of officers in the Commissariat Department, the Medical Department, Veterinary Surgeons and the Chaplains Department. A section of Officers on the Foreign Half-Pay gives lists for the German Legion and Miscellaneous Corps (Brunswick Cavalry, Brunswick Infantry, Chasseurs Britanniques, Royal Corsican Rangers, Dillon's Regiment, Greek Light Infantry, Royal Malta Regiment, Meuron's Regiment, Roll's Regiment, Sicilian Regiment, Watteville's Regiment, York Light Infantry Volunteers, the Foreign Veteran Battalion, and the Foreign Corps of Waggoners). After lists of officers in garrisons and military establishments, there are sections listing officers holding Gold Decorations for their parts in various important actions and other British decorations, and those holding medals bestowed by foreign powers.
