| Missing Next-of-Kin and Heirs-at-Law

The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1860, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. RANT. | De Bernardy's Unclaimed Money Register: Australia
(1883)
This register is divided into three parts, under these headings:
1. 'Unclaimed Money. The following persons, or their representatives, are entitled to property'.
2. 'Australia. Unclaimed Money. The following persons, who went to Australia, if alive, or if dead their representatives, are entitled to property'. Australia is here understood to include New Zealand.
3. 'America. Unclaimed Money. The following persons, who went to America, if alive, or, if dead, their representatives, are entitled to property'.
In each case there then follows a list of names, alphabetical by surname (in capitals), and some brief circumstantial details, usually with a year, mostly from 1810 onwards, but with a handful of earlier instances. Anyone thinking they might have a claim to one of these estates was invited to send full details to Messrs De Bernardy Brothers, 28, John-street, Bedford-row, London, to further their claim.RANT. Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (First, Second and Third), and within each class in order of score in the examination (students getting exactly equal marks are bracketed together). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. The course was divided into parts I and II, with separate examinations, and the results into First Class (split into Divisions 1, 2, 3); Second Class (split into Divisions 1, 2, 3); and Third Class (split into Divisions 1, 2, 3), but the examinants listed purely alphabetically within each division. In the lists for Part II, those students gaining firsts are further annotated with the letters b, c, d or e, denoting the section or sections for which they were awarded first class honours. The letter a indicates that the candidate had also attained a first class standard in section A. An asterisk next to any of these letters indicates special distinction. Women students are listed separately, but on the same basis. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Joseph Foster's Hand-List of Men-at-the-Bar gives a paragraph biography of men who had been called to the bar and were alive in 1885. After the full name (surname first, in capitals) there is a short statement of occupation or practice; a student at which inn of court; when called to the bar; father's name and then address; when born; if married, and, if so, wife's name (and her father's name) is often given. The London Metropolitan Police Register of Joiners (MEPO 4/337) lists policemen joining the force 14 July 1902 to 10 April 1911 (warrant numbers 88812 to 100006). The register is alphabetical, in so far as the recruits are listed chronologically grouped under first letters of surname. It gives Date of Appointment, Name, Number of Warrant, Cause of Removal from Force (resigned, dismissed, promoted or died), and Date of Removal. The information about removal is sometimes wanting. A final column of 'Remarks' is largely blank, but occasionally gives an alias or a cross-reference to another warrant number. The Law List for 1918 includes this 'List of Counsel, Special Pleaders, and Conveyancers at the Bar'. Each name is given in full, surname first; then the name of the Inn of Court as an abbreviation (G., Gray's Inn; I., Inner Temple; L., Lincoln's Inn; M., Middle Temple; and D. C. for Doctors' Commons) and date at which called to the bar. Barristers in practice are usually furnished with an address, and there are some abbreviated references to judicial awards and appointments. Kelly's Directory of Blackheath, Lee, Greenwich, Eltham &c. includes this directory of private residents, listed alphabetically by surname and christian name, with address, covering an area extending from the river Thames on the north to Mottingham and Grove Park on the south, and from Eltham on the east to Deptford Creek and Hither Green on the west. The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).RANT.
