Outstanding soldiers of the Gordon Highlanders (1881-1901) Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 75th Regimental District - Aberdeen. The 1st battalion was moved from Malta to Egypt in 1882, and added "Egypt, 1882, 1884", "Tel-el-Kebir" and "Nile 1884-1885" to the regimental honours. It was moved to Malta in 1885; on to Ceylon in 1888; and from there to India in 1891, being stationed at Rawul Pindee by 1895. It took part in the Chitral Relief Force of 1895, and the North West Frontier campaign of 1897 to 1898, adding "Chitral" and "Tirah" to the honours. The battalion returned to Scotland in 1898, but was sent out for the South African war in 1899. The 2nd battalion was moved from India to South Africa in 1881, taking part in the Boer war, returned home in 1882, and by 1885 was stationed at Devonport. It was sent to the Channel Islands in 1885; to Ireland in 1887; and back to Scotland in 1891, and by 1895 was stationed at Glasgow. It was moved to England in 1896; to India in 1898; and to South Africa in 1899. The two battalions added "South Africa, 1899-1902", "Paardeberg" and "Defence of Ladysmith" to the colours. PROVEN. Member of the North-East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders (1903) This membership list, as of July 1903, is divided into four grades - Honorary Members, Members, Associates and Graduates. In each case the full name (or name and initials) is given with personal or business address, and month of election to that grade, and to the lower grades. The list is annotated with these abbreviations: A., Agent and Accountant; B. B., Boiler Builder; C. E., Civil and Consulting Engineer; E., Engineer and Boilermaker; E. A., Engineering Agent; E. E., Electrical Engineer; F., Iron and Brass Founder; F. M., Forge Master; I. & S. M., Iron and Steel Merchant or Manufacturer; M., Merchant; M. S., Marine Superintendent; N. A., Naval Architect; R. Blind Annuitants (1912) The General Register of Blind Annuitants for 1912 listed nearly 6000 recipients of annuities from various charities and trusts in the British Isles. This index sets out the same information again in tabular form, giving: register number; surname; christian name or initials; full address; year of birth or age; amount of annual payment; year of appointment; recurrence (if renewed: yearly, weekly, or monthly); and abbreviated name of the charity. Many individuals were receiving sums from more than one source. Where (n) is given after the surname, it indicates a pension granted since the last previous edition; (+) shows an increase in pension; (-) a decrease. PROVEN. Cost: £4.00. Chemists (1950) The Royal Institute of Chemistry was founded in 1877, and was open only to British subjects (and also, in due course, to citizens of the newly-created Republic of Ireland). Associates of the institute (A. R. I. C.) qualified either by studying chemistry, physics, mathematics and an optional science for the institute's examination (which insisted on a high standard of practical laboratory efficiency); or by obtaining good honours degrees or equivalent qualifications, with chemistry as principal subject, and having undergone training in allied sciences. Associates of at least three years' standing could then be admitted to the Fellowship (F. R. I. C.) either by taking a further examination in a special branch of chemistry, or by submitting the results of work or evidence of experience sufficient to justify the Council in granting exemption from such further examination. This register of fellows and associates, correct to 31 August 1950, contains 11,545 names, arranged alphabetically, surname first (in capitals), with qualifications, current address, telephone number, and (in italics) a brief description of present post in the chemical industry. Finally, year of admission as associate (A.) (and, where appropriate, fellow (F.) is given on the right-hand side. With this may appear the notation (x) for a fellow of the Chemical Society, (y) for a member of the Society of Chemical Industry, or (z) for a joint subscriber to all three chartered bodies. PROVEN. Inhabitants of Liverpool (1955) Kelly's (Gore's) Directory of Liverpool and District includes this alphabetical list of residents and traders, with names, addresses, and (where applicable) telephone numbers. Covering a large area around Liverpool, the directory includes Bootle, Birkenhead and Wallasey, and thus the populous areas of southwest Lancashire and of the Wirral peninsula of Cheshire. PROVEN.
