Naval Ratings Killed in 1915
(1915)
The monthly lists of Royal Navy ratings killed from the start of the Great War from January to December 1915 are arranged alphabetically by surname and christian names, with rank, and official number. The lists include marines, merchant navy, reservists, and a few civilian canteen staff also killed in the conflict. Full names are given, except for a few cases where a middle name is represented only by an initial.

Divorcees
(1930)
On Mondays during the law terms the Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty Division of the High Court of Justice issued lists of divorce decrees nisi that had been declared absolute, the final stage of the divorce proceedings. The lists posted by the court appeared in various Tuesday newspapers, including The Times. The surname and initials of the husband and wife are given, except in those cases where a co-respondent was cited as having committed adultery with the wife; then the initials are omitted, with the co-respondent's surname added as a second defendant. The Civil Service Commission issued a monthly report listing certificates issued to civil servants of various grades on their initial appointment (whether after open competition, or without); assignments to higher grades; and transfers between departments. This is the report for June 1937: the sample scan is from the listing for post office clerks. The lists for the Inland Revenue Department cover clerks, shorthand typists, clerk-shorthand-typists, a clerical assistant and a clerk-typist; tax officers; third-class valuers; assistant collectors; clerical assistants in the offices of inspectors of taxes; writing assistants; and a woman teller.MCCOURT. London Telephone Subscribers

The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).MCCOURT. University of Ireland Members of Convocation

The University of Ireland was established by royal charter in 1908, with three constituent colleges - University College, Dublin; University College, Cork; and University College, Galway. The university calendar for 1940 includes this complete list of Members of Convocation. It is similar to the general list of graduates of the university, but not exactly the same, for it includes academic staff of the university not necessarily graduates of the same, and not all graduates registered for membership of convocation. The list gives full names (surname first), degree and year of graduation, and, importantly, full address as in 1940 - information not given in the general list. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, founded in 1847, was incorporated by royal charter in 1930. The list of members of 1 March 1947 gives the names (surname first) and addresses of the seven classes of member - Honorary Members (Hon. M. I. Mech. E.); Members (M. I. Mech. E.); Associate Members (A. M. I. Mech. E.); Companions (C. I. Mech. E.); Associates (A. I. Mech. E.); Graduates (G. I. Mech. E.); and Students (S. I. Mech. E.). The year of attaining qualification is given in the left-hand margin; in the higher grades the years of achieving the lower grades are also given, bracketed together. The crossed swords symbol indicates naval or military service during the Great War of 1914-1918; an italic b shows a member of the Benevolent Fund.
