Macclesfield Hundred court, held at Macclesfield every fourth Monday for the trial of civil causes, had jurisdiction over Bredbury, Brinnington, Bramhall, Fulshaw, Cheadle, Handforth, Dukinfield, Etchells, Hyde, Northenden, Romiley, Stockport, Werneth, Mottram (in Longdendale), Nether Alderley, Over Alderley, Birtles, Bollin Fee, Newton by Butley, Capesthorne, Chelford, Old Withington, Chorley, Eaton, Fallibroome, Henbury, Marton, Mottram St Andrew, Worth, Woodford, Pownall Fee, Snelson, Siddington, Somerford Booths, Lower Withington and Great Warford, all in east Cheshire. The sample scan is taken from 29 July 1734: as in this case, whenever an action continued, through a series of writs or actual appearances, through subsequent sittings of the court, these were all entered on the same page, so that each is the full record of the particular action through to its conclusion. Some actions will have been settled 'at the court door', in which case nothing more is recorded than the names of plaintiff and defendant, the nature and value of the action. Addresses and occupations are not usually given for plaintiff or defendant, but are stated for bail sureties. On the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession against various European powers, there was a muster in Rhode Island for the defence of the colony, and privateers were manned to harry Spanish, and later French, shipping. | Nottinghamshire Marriage Licences
(1701-1753)
Nottingham Archdeaconry, which was almost coextensive with the county of Nottingham, lay in the diocese and province of York, but it had substantially independent jurisdiction for both probate and the issuing of marriage licences. These are abstracts of the archdeaconry marriage licences: they usually state the groom's address, occupation, age, and condition; the bride's address, age and condition; and the names of the churches or parishes at which it was intended the marriage would be celebrated. Not all licences led to marriages. Where the age given is 21, it should be construed as '21 or over'. There was no obligation for the marriage to take place at the parish suggested, but the licence would only be valid within the county. These abstracts have been annotated with extra information found on the marriage bonds. 26 Nottinghamshire parishes (Beckingham, Darlton, Dunham, Eaton, North Leverton, Ragnall, Rampton, South Wheatley, Cropwell Bishop, Bleasby, Blidworth, Calverton, Caunton, Edingley, Farnsfield, Halloughton, Holme, Kirklington, Morton, North Muskham, Norwell, Oxton, South Muskham, Southwell, Upton and Woodborough) lay within the small peculiar jurisdiction of Southwell, which issued its own licences: abstracts of these for the period 1755 to 1833 are also included here.MATTHEWSON. (1780)
The poll for the election of two citizens to serve in Parliament for the City and Liberty of Westminster was begun 7 September and ended 23 September 1780, the candidates being the Hon. Charles James Fox (F), Sir George Brydges Rodney, bart. (R), and the Right Hon. Thomas Pelham Clinton the Earl of Lincoln (L). In this poll book the names of all voters are given, by parish and within each parish by street, arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, with the individual votes cast shown in the right hand columns. Pages 1 to 48 cover the parish of St George, Hanover Square; 49 to 100, St Martin; 101 to 134, St Clement and St Mary le Strand; 135 to 155, St Ann, Soho; 157 to 166, St Paul, Covent Garden; 167 to 170, St Martin le Grand; 171 to 224, St James; 225 to 274, St Margaret and St John.MATTHEWSON. This is compiled from reports from Portsmouth, Deal, Milford, Poole, Standgate Creek and Gravesend as to merchant shipping movements; news of losses and sightings coming in from various ports; a list of Ships Arrived in the (London) River, in the Clyde, in the Downs, off Beachy Head, off Dover, off Poole, at Alicante, Amsterdam, Ancona, Baltimore, Barbadoes, Belfast, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Boston (New England), Bristol, Bryar, Cadiz, Campvere, Charlestown, Cork, Cowes, Creek, Cuxhaven, Dartmouth, Dominica, Dover, Dublin, Dunkirk, Falmouth, Faro, Gibraltar, Glendore, Grenada, Halifax (Nova Scotia), Havre de Grace, Helvoetsluys, Hull, Kinsale, Lancaster, Leghorn, Leith, Lisbon, Liverpool, Londonderry, Lough Ryan, Margate, Milford, Mogador, Naples, New York, Newcastle (on Tyne), Newry, Ostend, Penzance, Philadelphia, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Rotterdam, St Domingo, St Kitts, St Lucar, St Lucia, St Marks, Scilly, Sealock, Smyrna, Standgate Creek, Tenerife, Texel, Waterford, Zeirickser, and in 'Africa', the Isles de Lo's, Jamaica, North Carolina and Virginia; and Reports of Ships made at the Custom House in London. Thomas Sanderson's 'Original Poems' was published in Carlisle in 1800. The list of subscribers is arranged geographically: London; Tunbridge; Gloucester; Epsom; Exeter; Nottingham; Northampton; Cambridge; Oxford; Hertford; Carlisle; Penrith; Longtown; Hesket Newmarket; Wigton; Keswick; Durham; Newcastle; Maryport; Dublin; Edinburgh; York; and Liverpool, each including surrounding areas; Madras; and the West Indies. Where more than one copy was ordered, the number is given after the subscriber's name. At the foot of the list is this note: 'The Author cannot take leave of his friends without warmly thanking them for the generous encouragement they have given to the subscription. Their benevolence does them the more honour, as it was called forth in the favour of a Person who cannot make them any better return than mere professions of gratitude.'MATTHEWSON.
