The Mercantile Navy List and Annual Appendage to the Commercial Code of Signals for All Nations, edited by J. H. Brown, was published By Authority in 1857. It includes this list of Pilotage Certificates of Service. It gives masters of passenger-carrying vessels licensed by the Board of Trade to act as pilots themselves in certain stretches of water. The table gives the full name of the master; draft of water of the vessel; owner; and the limits to which his pilotage certificate extends. It includes this list of Pilotage Certificates granted to masters of vessels by the local pilotage authorities of Ayr, Beaumaris, Belfast, Bristol, Carlisle, Cowes, Dublin, Falmouth, Fleetwood, Goole, Holyhead, Hull, London, Londonderry, Lowestoft, Milford, Newcastle, Newhaven, Padstow, Plymouth, Poole, Southampton, Weymouth and Yarmouth. In each case, apart from stating the certificate fees and the limits within which the certificate held, the master's full name, the name of his vessel, and the port to which it belonged are set out. Mathematics students at Cambridge University

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (Wranglers, Senior Optimes and Junior Optimes), and within each class in order of score in the examination (the names of candidates with equal scores are bracketed together, with the word 'AEq.'). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Winners of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes are marked (1) senior, (2) for junior. The Greek letter alpha is affixed to the names of those students who had gained first class results in the Classical Tripos; beta to those entered in the second class; and gamma to those entered in the third class. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. New South Wales Intestates
(1857)
The probate courts of the Australian colonies furnished returns of estates of deceased intestates, giving full name, colonial residence, supposed British or foreign residence of family (often unknown, or left blank), amount of the estate and how much had been disbursed and how. The date of death is often stated, and if by accident, suicide or crime. Names were carried forward from return to return until the estate was expended or exhausted. MARTIN.
