Traders and Professionals in Birmingham and Suburbs (1878) The Post Office Directory of Birmingham with its Suburbs, edited by E. R. Kelly, and published in 1878, has two main alphabetical lists - Court and Commercial. The suburbs included are Aston, Bickenhill Park, Birchfield End, Castle Bromwich, Erdington, Saltley (with Washwood Heath), Ward End (including Little Bromwich) and Witton, in Warwickshire; Handsworth (with Soho), Harborne, Perry Barr and Smethwick, in Staffordshire; and King's Heath, King's Norton, Moseley, Northfield, Selly Oak and Yardley (including Hall Green and Stechford) in Worcestershire. Elementary Teachers in Huddersfield (1880) The National Union of Elementary Teachers, established in 1870, brought together members of the profession throughout England and Wales, organized in local Teachers' Associations. Lists of members of the associations were printed in the annual reports. Each association's officers are listed first, then the ordinary members. Surnames are given, Mr/Mrs/Miss, initial(s), and the name of the school - B. S., British School; Bd. S., Board School; Congl. S., Congregational School; End. S., Endowed School; Gr. S., Grammar School; N. S., National School; Par. S., Parochial School; Pres. S., Presbyterian School; R. C. S., Roman Catholic School; Undl. S., Undenominational School; W. S., Wesleyan School. Soldiers of the 2nd battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, fighting in Egypt (1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 2nd battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, embarked from Ireland to Bermuda in 1876; was moved to Gibraltar in 1880; and thence to Egypt in 1882, taking part in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. The battalion returned to England in June 1886, having taken part in further fighting in 1884 to 1885; but this medal roll, compiled in Alexandria in November 1882, refers only to the 1882 campaign. Outstanding soldiers of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (1881-1901) Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on Regimental District No. 32 - Bodmin. The 1st battalion returned from the Cape of Good Hope in September 1877, and in 1885 was stationed at Dublin; it embarked for Malta late that year, and went on to India, being at Meerut by 1895. The 2nd battalion embarked for Bermuda 21 October 1876, was sent to Gibraltar in 1880, and to Egypt in 1882, adding "Egypt, 1882", "Tel-el-Kebir" and "Nile, 1884-1885" to the regimental honours. The battalion returned to England in 1886; was sent to Ireland in 1891; back to England in 1898; and off to South Africa in 1899, where it gained the honours "South Africa, 1899-1902" and "Paardeberg". Carpenters Excluded from their Union: Leith (1907) The 48th annual report of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, from December 1906 to December 1907, gives lists of members excluded from the union: the great majority for arrears of membership fees, but some for 'non-payment of entrance money'; 'for working contrary to the society's interest'; 'false declaration of entry'; 'imposing on the society's funds'; 'withholding the funds of the society'; 'violating rule while on sick benefit'; 'bringing the society into discredit'; and 'members who have paid up and resigned'. Soldiers wounded: Highland Light Infantry (1916) Lists of names of soldiers wounded, died of wounds, died, missing presumed dead, and taken prisoner by the enemy, were issued to the British national press under the title Roll of Honour. Each man is identified by surname, initials and number. The regimental returns from which the daily Roll was compiled were made up over the previous week or weeks. Each regimental return may be partial, covering only part of the alphabet. The lists are provisional, in that a man reported wounded one day may appear as died of wounds later; a missing presumed dead may later be reported as having been found, or as having died; the lists of prisoners of war were provided by the enemy and will relate to captures weeks earlier. However, these rolls are the most comprehensive single source of names of British and allied combatants meeting with misfortune in the Great War. This is the roll published 3 August 1916. KILLIN. Civil servants in the Unemployment Assistance Board (1937) The Civil Service Commission issued a monthly report listing certificates issued to civil servants of various grades on their initial appointment (whether after open competition, or without); assignments to higher grades; and transfers between departments. This is the report for June 1937: the sample scan is from the listing for post office clerks. Locomotive Engineers (1951) The Institution of Locomotive Engineers was founded in 1911 and incorporated in 1915. This register of members was issued 1 September 1951. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname (in capitals) and initials. The left-hand column gives the year of attaining the grades of membership: A., Associate; A. M., Associate Member; G., Graduate; H. M., Honorary Member; L. M., Life Member. In the case of members of the council, past presidents and other officials of the institution, that is stated in italics between brackets after the name.
