Part of the Portland collection of manuscripts was transferred to Longleat in Wiltshire after the marriage in 1759 of Thomas Thynne, late Marquis of Bath, with the eldest daughter of the 2nd Duke of Portland. These included the papers of her maternal grandfather, Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford. Mrs S. C. Lomas prepared this calendar for the Historical Manuscripts Commission, published in 1907. These letters had been chosen in an earlier age from the Harvey family correspondence, and bound in two volumes as 'Select Autograph Letters, &c., 1516 to the middle of the 18th century,' and from among these Mrs Lomas in turn chose hitherto unpublished material that seemed of historical interest.FINCH. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. | Voters in Chichester rape, Sussex

A poll of freeholders to elect two knights of the shire to represent the county of Sussex was taken at Chichester in 1774. This poll book lists each voter's full name; abode; where the freehold lay and of what it consisted (b., barn; f., farm; g., garden; h., house; l., land; m., mill; o., orchard; r., rectory; w. sh., workshop); and the name of the occupier (if any) (often surname only); with dashes in the right-hand columns indicating votes for the candidates, Lord George Henry Lennox, sir Thomas Spencer Wilson and sir James Peachey. The franchise was limited to freeholders of 40 shillings per annum and more. The sample scan shows part of Chichester rape. The poll of the freeholders of Warwickshire was taken at Warwick from the 20th to the 31st of October 1774, the candidates being Sir Charles Holte baronet, Thomas George Skipwith esquire, and John Mordaunt esquire. The poll book is arranged by hundred, then by parish or township in which the qualifying freehold lay: the voters' full names are given, surname first, and their places of abode, not necessarily in the same district.FINCH. | Herefordshire Freeholders Deploring the American Rebellion

In December 1775 this address of the sheriff, gentlemen, clergy and freeholders of Herefordshire was presented to king George III: 'To confirm the Liberties of Britain by the Establishment of the Legislative Powers of Parliament, our Ancestors sacrificed their Blood; and to secure those Liberties to their Posterity, transferred the Succession to the Crown to your Majesty’s Family. - To defend and maintain those Powers, we look up to your Majesty as the great Guardian of our Constitution; and permit us to assure your Majesty, that we shall chearfully concur in every Support which our Duty may call for, or our Abilities can furnish, towards the Success of your Majesty’s Arms over your rebellious Subjects; at the same Time most ardently wishing, that your Majesty’s gracious Offers of Mercy, together with the firm Support of your dutiful and loyal Subjects, may influence the Hearts of the Rebellious to return to their Duty and Allegiance; and that your whole People reunited may, with us, be convinced, that to be a British Subject, with all its Consequences, is to be the freest Member of any Civil Society in the World. And we pray to God, that your Majesty and your Progeny may long reign over these Realms in undisturbed Peace and undiminished Splendor.' | Wandsworth Baptisms

The ancient parish of Wandsworth in Surrey comprised the single township of Wandsworth, including the hamlets of Garratt, Half Farthing and Summers Town. It lay in the archdeaconry of Surrey of the diocese of Winchester: unfortunately, few bishop's transcripts of Surrey parish registers survive earlier than 1800. Although the original parish registers of Wandsworth doubtless commenced in 1538, the volume(s) before 1603 had been lost by the 19th century. In 1889 a careful transcript by John Traviss Squire of the first three surviving registers was printed, and we have now indexed it year by year. The baptism registers from 1775 to 1788 normally give date of baptism, and the names of the child and its father and mother, as well as date of birth.FINCH.
