John Harley of the Historical Manuscripts Commission was invited by Reginald Rawdon Hastings to examine his family's extensive archives at the Manor House, Ashby de la Zouche, in Leicestershire. Harley produced a detailed calendar, of which this is the second volume, published in 1930, Hastings himself having since died, and Harley having been killed at Gallipoli, the work being completed by his colleague, Francis Bickley. This volume covers four categories of the records: correspondence of the Hastings family 1528 to 1699; newsletters sent by professional reporters in London 1669 to 1693; papers relating to the Band of Gentlemen Pensioners, of which Theophilus 7th earl of Huntingdon was captaon, 1677 to 1685; and correspondence of the Rawdon family, 1641 to 1694, including papers of George Monck, afterwards Duke of Albemarle, when commanding in Ulster. | Hertfordshire Sessions
(1581-1700)
Incidents from the Hertfordshire Sessions Rolls. These cover a wide range of criminal and civil business for the county, with presentments, petitions, and recognizances to appear as witnesses: many of the records concern the county authorities dealing with regulation of alehouses, religious conventicles, absence from church, highways, poaching, profanation of the Sabbath, exercising trades without due apprenticeship &c. Unlike the Sessions Books, the decisions of the justices are not recorded on the rolls, which serve more as a record of evidence and allegations. Where the date of a roll is given with an asterisk, it indicates that that particular document was not then in the county muniments, but in the archives of the Marquess of Salisbury (whose ancestors had served as Custos Rotulorum) at Hatfield House. This is a calendar of abstracts of extracts: it is by no means a completely comprehensive record of the surviving Hertfordshire sessions rolls of the period, but coverage is good. DIGHTON. The London Gazette of this period contained much political news, a few official notices, and a section of Advertisements. The Advertisements are diverse: some seeking to publicize a sale, an event, a publication, or a service; others appealing for help in tracing missing persons, property, or horses; bankruptcy notices &c. We have separated out all this material into different categories for indexing. Each issue of the Gazette was given a four- or five-day date such as '20-24 March'; the actual date of publication would be the last (i. e., 24 March), but modern sources often quote the first (i. e., 20 March). The dates are Old Style, so before 25 March they appear as 1700. We cover issues 3668 (2-6 January 1700/1) to 3770 (25-29 December 1701). In 1873 H. Sydney Grazebrook published this transcript of 'an old MS. in the possession of R. F. Tomes, esq., of Weston, near Stratford-upon-Avon. The manuscript is "A True and perfect List of the Christian Names, Surnames, Addic'ons and places of abode of all persons within the County of Worcester who are betweene the Age of One and Twenty Yeares and the age of Seaventy Yeares who have, in their owne Names or in Trust for them, within this County of Worcester, Ten pounds pr Annu' of freehold or Copyhold Lands, or of Lands of Ancient Demesne, or in rents in fee Simple, fee Tayle, or for their owne or some other person's Life, as they are returned by the severall Cheife Conbles. and Petty Conbles. within this County att the Generall quarter Sessions of the Peace for the said County of Worcester, the fifth day of October, Annoq. D'ni 1703, and adjourned to the 25th day of October following, pursuant to an Act of Parliament intituled "An Act for the Ease of Jurors".' | Licences for marriages in southern England
(1632-1714)
The province or archbishopric of Canterbury covered all England and Wales except for the northern counties in the four dioceses of the archbishopric of York (York, Durham, Chester and Carlisle). Marriage licences were generally issued by the local dioceses, but above them was the jurisdiction of the archbishop. Where the prospective bride and groom were from different dioceses it would be expected that they obtain a licence from the archbishop; in practice, the archbishop residing at Lambeth, and the actual offices of the province being in London, which was itself split into myriad ecclesiastical jurisdictions, and spilled into adjoining dioceses, this facility was particularly resorted to by couples from London and the home counties, although there are quite a few entries referring to parties from further afield. Three calendars of licences issued by the Faculty Office of the archbishop were edited by George A Cokayne (Clarenceux King of Arms) and Edward Alexander Fry and printed as part of the Index Library by the British Record Society Ltd in 1905. The first calendar is from 14 October 1632 to 31 October 1695 (pp. 1 to 132); the second calendar (awkwardly called Calendar No. 1) runs from November 1695 to December 1706 (132-225); the third (Calendar No. 2) from January 1707 to December 1721, but was transcribed only to the death of queen Anne, 1 August 1714. The calendars give only the dates and the full names of both parties. Where the corresponding marriage allegations had been printed in abstract by colonel Joseph Lemuel Chester in volume xxiv of the Harleian Society (1886), an asterisk is put by the entry in this publication.
