South County Durham Poll Book: Darlington District

A poll for two Knights of the Shire to represent in Parliament the Southern Division of the county palatine of Durham was taken on 21 and 22 December 1832. This poll book sets out all the electors by polling district (Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Darlington, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Sedgefield, Stanhope and Stockton) and gives registered number; full name (surname first); place of abode; nature of qualification (such as House as occupier, Land as occupier, Copyhold Property, &c.); and the name of the parish, township or place where the property is situate. The votes are set out in the right-hand columns, under P. (for Joseph Pearse, jun., esq.), B. (John Bowes, esq.), and S. (Robert Duncombe Shafto, esq.), the three candidates. A voter could choose two candidates, in which case a dash is put in each of the two appropriate columns, or plump for just one - where a star is placed in that candidate's column. This was the first election after the Reform Act, which extended the franchise in the counties to all adult men possessing freehold worth 40s a year or more, or copyhold or long leasehold of £10 or more, or being tenants or short leaseholders of £50 or more. Under the Reform Act of 1832, the County of Norfolk was allotted four Members of Parliament, being two Knights of the Shire for the Eastern Division and two for the Western. The Eastern Division included the hundreds of Blofield, Clavering, Depwade, Diss, Earsham, North Erpingham, South Erpingham, Eynsford, East Flegg, West Flegg, Forehoe, Happing, Henstead, Humbleyard, Loddon, Taverham, Tunstead and Walsham. The franchise was available to freeholders worth 40s a year or over; copyholders and long leaseholders of £10 or more; short leaseholders and tenants of £50 or more: but limited to adult males. Voting took place on 20 and 21 December 1832. This poll book lists the voters for each parish, with the votes cast. Voting was not compulsory, and non-voters are not listed. Each voter had two votes: the votes are indicated in the columns C. (Lord Henry Cholmondeley, 2852); P. (Nathaniel William Peach, 2960); K. (Hon. George Keppel, 3261); and W. (William Howe Windham, 3304). The voters were not necessarily resident in the parish, but derived their franchise from the land there; so some of the names have addresses outside the parish. After the name there may appear the abbreviations cop. for copyholder; oc. for occupier; or le. for leaseholder: the rest are freeholders or annuitants.BREWSTER. Justices of the Peace throughout England and Wales had the power of summary conviction for certain minor offences, principally vagrancy, poaching, petty theft, bastardy and assault. The magistrates' clerks for each district were required by Parliament to make a return of the names, offences, terms of imprisonment, and whether a written record was made of the proceedings, for the period from Michaelmas (29 September) 1834 to Michaelmas 1835. The return vary in completeness from magistrate to magistrate - the fullest returns also give the offender's address, the amount of fine or length of imprisonment, and/or the names of the justices. A poll was taken 6 and 7 January 1835 for the election of members to serve in Parliament for the borough of Kingston-upon-Hull, the candidates being Matthew Davenport Hill, William Hutt and David Carruthers. This poll book lists all the electors in the wards of Hull (St Mary's, North, Trinity, Whitefriar, Humber, Austin, and South Myton), in Sculcoates, and in Sutton, Southcoates, Drypool &c. In each ward the names are arranged in five sections: Householders and Burgesses occupying Ten Pound Households; Burgesses not occupying Ten Pound Households; Unpolled Voters residing in the ward; Unpolled Freemen; and Non-Resident Freemen not polling. There are also short lists of votes that were tendered but the validity of which remained uncertain. In all cases full names and addresses are given: where electors voted, their votes are indicated in the right-hand columns, the numbers shown there being their numbers in the cumulating totals for each candidate. | Tradesmen of Lynn in Norfolk

Lists of admissions of freemen of Lynn from the earliest surviving records to 1836 were published by the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society in 1913. These lists were extracted from the tallage rolls of 1291 to 1306; the Red Register of Lynn from 1342 to 1395; from the assembly rolls for the reigns of Henry IV and V [1399 to 1422]; from the hall books from 1423; and from a list of freemen starting in 1443 in the Book of Oaths (but itself abstracted from entries in the hall books). Freedom of the borough, necessary to practise a trade there, could be obtained by birth (in which case the father's name and occupation are usually given); by apprenticeship to a freeman (the master's name and occupation being given); by gratuity; or by purchase. Both the freemen and the masters listed are indexed here. The main abbreviations used are: B., freedom taken up by right of birth; A., freedom taken up by right of apprenticeship; G., freedom granted by order of assembly (gratuity); and P., freedom acquired by purchase.BREWSTER.
