The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Nottingham). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797.

| Freeholder voters in Middlesex
(1802)
A poll to elect two knights of the shire to represent the county of Middlesex, was held at Brentford 13 to 29 July 1802. The electors were the adult male freeholders of more than 40s per annum of real estate. This poll book lists the voters alphabetically by surname, giving christian name, abode, where the freehold was situate, the nature of the freehold (such as messuage, house, land, rent-charge &c.), the occupier's name, and whether the freeholder voted for William Mainwaring, George Byng or sir Francis Burdett. The entries are printed across facing pages, of which this sample shows part of a lefthand page. For each name indexed, the matching pair of scans is provided. This is the index to the freeholders.

| Masters of British Merchantmen
(1834)
Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping was established in 1834, following the demise of two earlier societies for registering shipping in Britain. The new register in 1834 was created from an alphabetical list of British ships with no more detail than name, master's name, tonnage, and port to which they belonged. Lloyd's insurance syndicate provided £1000 for the establishment of a new system of surveyors, and as the year progressed many of the entries in the register were then annotated with additional information - type of vessel (Bk, barque; Bg, brig; Cr, cutter; Dr, dogger; G, galliott; H, hoy; K, ketch; Lr, lugger; S, ship; Sk, smack; Sp, sloop; Sr, schooner; St, schoot; Sw, snow; Yt, yacht), place and year of build, owners, destined voyage, and classification of the vessel and its stores, with the month (indicated by the final number in the last column) of inspection. Underneath each of these amended entries details were given of construction and repair, with year - s., sheathed; d., doubled; C., coppered; I. B., iron bolts; s. M., sheathed with marine metal; s. Y. M., sheathed with yellow metal; F., felt; PH., patent hair; Cl., clincher; len., lengthened; lrp., large repairs; trp., thorough repairs; ND., new deck; M. TSds., new top-sides; W. C., wales cased; NW., new wales; Srprs, some repairs - and, in italics, the timber of the ship is described - B. B., black birch; Bh, beech; C., cedar; E., elm; F., fir; G., gum; Ght., greenheart; Hk., hackmatack; L., locust; L. O., live oak; P., pine; P. P., pitch pine; R. P., red pine; Y. P., yellow pine; S., spruce; T., teak; W. O., white oak. The sample scan is from the main list. The third column, reserved for masters' names, is not particularly wide; with short surnames, an initial will be given; but longer surnames omit the initials, and even longer surnames are abbreviated. This is the index to masters in the main list. Often new masters had been appointed by the time of survey, and their names are added in slightly smaller type under the original master's names in the third column. The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 5: described as: "Saint George's Road No 25 to No 51 inclusive - Prospect Cottages by 31 - Ely Place - West Place - West Square - South Street (3 houses) to the end of Parish - East Street & Stables - East Place and Court - North Place - & West Street." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark, ecclesiastical district of St Jude. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 25 to 51 St Georges Road (including Prospect Cottage), 2 to 12 Ely Place, 6 to 11 West Place, 1 to 49 West Square, 11 and 12 South Street, 1 to 11 East Street, cottage and stables, 1 to 13 East Place and Court, 1 North House, 1 North Cottage, 2 to 7 North Place, 1 and 2 West Street.SIMNER. The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.SIMNER. The China Medal was awarded to soldiers and sailors involved in the various actions of the war against China, in which this ship was engaged from 1856 to 1860. The medals were either delivered on board or sent on in 1862: except that many of the men were no longer immediately traceable, and the remarks on the roll show that some medals were not sent on for several years, and some were never sent.SIMNER.
