King Charles I was executed 30 January 1649, the kingship was abolished and government by a Council of State was established 14 February 1649. Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector 16 December 1653; died 3 September 1658; and was succeeded by his son Richard, who abdicated 24 May 1659. Charles II was established on the throne 29 May 1660. From 1648 to 1660 parliament sequestrated royalists' estates, restoring many by a process of heavy fines called compounding; this was administered by the Committee for Compounding, working through county committees. These raised considerable amounts of money, money which was vitally necessary for maintaining the parliamentary army's campaigns to subdue opposition in the three kingdoms - England, Scotland and Ireland. The raising and delivery of these monies was the responsibility of the Committee for Advance of Money (C. A. M.). The records of these committees were detailed and extensive, amounting to about 300 volumes, and were calendared for the Public Record Office by Mary Anne Everett Green. Abstracts of the county Durham and Northumberland entries were collated by Richard Welford with a manuscript transcript of the proceedings of the parliamentary commissioners in county Durham surviving in Durham cathedral library, and published by the Surtees Society in 1905. The persons named in these abstracts are not only the delinquents themselves, and those who succeeded them in their estates, but tenants, debtors and creditors, and local constables and officials of the committees.STEAVENSON. Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Liverpool return. The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Bath). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797.

| Freeholder voters in Middlesex
(1802)
A poll to elect two knights of the shire to represent the county of Middlesex, was held at Brentford 13 to 29 July 1802. The electors were the adult male freeholders of more than 40s per annum of real estate. This poll book lists the voters alphabetically by surname, giving christian name, abode, where the freehold was situate, the nature of the freehold (such as messuage, house, land, rent-charge &c.), the occupier's name, and whether the freeholder voted for William Mainwaring, George Byng or sir Francis Burdett. The entries are printed across facing pages, of which this sample shows part of a lefthand page. For each name indexed, the matching pair of scans is provided. This is the index to the freeholders.

| Freeholders voting in Castle ward, Northumberland
(1826)
An election to choose two knights of the shire to represent Northumberland took place at Alnwick from 20 June to 6 July 1826. The candidates were Henry Thomas Liddell (L), Matthew Bell (B), Thomas Wentworth Beaumont (Bt) and Viscount Howick (H). The franchise included all freeholders of property worth 40 shillings or more per annum: each had two votes, but could plump for a single candidate. This poll book was published in 1827 and lists the voters from each ward: the freeholder's full name (surname first), residence, and the nature of the freehold (such as 'house at Corbridge'). The votes are shown in the right hand columns, with plumpers shown by a dagger. Castle ward included North Shields and the surrounding countryside.STEAVENSON.
