Nottinghamshire Marriage Licences (1577-1700)
Nottingham Archdeaconry, which was almost coextensive with the county of Nottingham, lay in the diocese and province of York, but it had substantially independent jurisdiction for both probate and the issuing of marriage licences. These are abstracts of the archdeaconry marriage licences: they usually state the groom's address, occupation, age, and condition; the bride's address, age and condition; and the names of the churches or parishes at which it was intended the marriage would be celebrated. Not all licences led to marriages. Where the age given is 21, it should be construed as '21 or over'. There was no obligation for the marriage to take place at the parish suggested, but the licence would only be valid within the county. These abstracts have been annotated with extra information found on the marriage bonds. 26 Nottinghamshire parishes (Beckingham, Darlton, Dunham, Eaton, North Leverton, Ragnall, Rampton, South Wheatley, Cropwell Bishop, Bleasby, Blidworth, Calverton, Caunton, Edingley, Farnsfield, Halloughton, Holme, Kirklington, Morton, North Muskham, Norwell, Oxton, South Muskham, Southwell, Upton and Woodborough) lay within the small peculiar jurisdiction of Southwell, which issued its own licences: abstracts of these for the period 1588 to 1754 are also included here.

The British Army of queen Victoria's time had a very extensive system of administration. The Royal Kalendar lists officials, both uniformed and civilian, from the Commander-in-Chief's Office at Horse Guards, the Adjutant-General's Office, the Recruiting Department, the Quarter Master-General's Office, the Judge Advocate-General's Office, the Consolidated Board of General Officers, the Cinque Ports, the War Office, the Office of her Majesty's Paymaster-General, the Ordnance Department (including the out-ports and stations at Woolwich, Chatham, Dover, Portsmouth, Devonport, Guernsey, Jersey, Chester and Liverpool, Carlisle, Hull, Landguard Fort and Harwich, Alderne, the gunpowder manufactory at Waltham Abbey, the gunpowder magazines at Hyde Park, Purfleet, Gravesend and Tilbury, Upnor Castle, Priddy's Hard, Tipner Point, Keyham Point, Marchwood and Tynemouth; at Edinburgh, Stirling Castle and Fort George in Scotland; in Antigua, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbadoes, Berbice, Bermuda, Cape of Good Hope, Colombo, Corfu, Demerara, Dominica, Gibraltar, Grenada, Halifax (Nova Scotia), Jamaica, Isle aux Nois, Kingston (Upper Canada), Malta, Mauritius, Montreal, New Brunswick, Prince Edward's Island, Quebec, Rideau Canal, Ottawa Canals, St Christopher, St Helena, St Lucia, St Vincent's, Santa Maura, Sierra Leone, Toronto, Tobago, Trincomalee, Trinidad and Zante), the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, the Royal Hospital at Chelsea, the Royal Military Asylum at Chelsea and Southampton, Army Agents, General Agents for the Recruiting Service, and Army general staff and governors of forts and garrisons in Ireland.

The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 3: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises the West side of Walworth Road, from Walworth House to Walworth Gate, including The Toll House, Sutherland St. (both sides), the whole of Sutherland Square, and Terrace, Charlotte St., Charlotte Row, Princes Row, Graham St., Blucher St., Montpelier St. (East side), North side of Hill St. to Kettle's Place. Including Kettle's Place". HO 107/1567. This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 6 Keens Row; 1 to 32 Sutherland Street; 1, 2 and 6 to 12 Sutherland Terrace; 1 to 17 Sutherland Square; 1 to 11 Walworth Place; 1 to 7 Charlotte Street; 1 and 2 Sutherland Cottages; 1 Sutherland Mews; 1 to 24 Charlotte Row; 1 to 13 Princes Row; Montpelier Tavern; Craigs Cottage; 1 to 13 Graham Street; 1 to 7 Blucher Street; 1 to 4 Montpelier Street; 1 to 14 Hill Street; 1 to 19 James Place; and 1 to 6 Kettles Place.

Gentry in London (1856)
The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.

The Post Office Directory of Birmingham with its Suburbs, edited by E. R. Kelly, and published in 1878, has two main alphabetical lists - Court and Commercial. The suburbs included are Aston, Bickenhill Park, Birchfield End, Castle Bromwich, Erdington, Saltley (with Washwood Heath), Ward End (including Little Bromwich) and Witton, in Warwickshire; Handsworth (with Soho), Harborne, Perry Barr and Smethwick, in Staffordshire; and King's Heath, King's Norton, Moseley, Northfield, Selly Oak and Yardley (including Hall Green and Stechford) in Worcestershire. The Court section, indexed here, lists nobility, gentry, clergy, and private residents in general.
