Carpenters Excluded from the Union: Birmingham

Each annual report of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners included a list of excluded members, arranged by branch. The great majority of the exclusions were for non-payment of entrance money or arrears, but other reasons are cited from time to time - fraud; bringing the society into discredit; dishonesty; entering the society under false pretences; working contrary to the society's interest; not being a competent workman. In most cases names are given in full.

Theology students at Cambridge University

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (First, Second and Third), and within each class in order of score in the examination (the names of candidates with equal scores are bracketed together). Students at the first examination are listed as Commencing Bachelors; at the last examination as Middle Bachelors. Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Gun & Co. of 17 Charlotte Street, London, published this 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4076 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. Associates of the Pharmaceutical Society

The annual list of Members, Associates and Apprentices of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain includes lists of London Members and Country Members (giving year of membership, number of certificate (if any), full name (surname first), and address: an asterisk indicates a Life Member); Associates admitted before 1 July 1842 (with full name, and where registered); Associates of the Society who had passed the Major Examination and were registered as Pharmaceutical Chemists, and Associates of the Society who had passed the Minor Examination and were registered as Assistants (year of admission, number of certificate, full name, and where registered); and Registered Apprentices (with date of registration, full name, residing with, and town).

Boys entering Harrow School
(1865)
This First Volume of the Second Series of the Harrow School Register was edited by J. H. Stogdon and published in 1925. The boys are listed by term of entrance, and then alphabetically by surname and christian names (in bold). Next, in brackets and in italics, is the school house to which he belonged - or, H. B. indicating a day boy whose family lived in Harrow. Stogdon then gives the father's surname and initials, and address. In cases where the boy was prominent in sports at school, or won academic prizes, scholarships &c., that is given; then the year of leaving the school; and a synopsis of his career, so far as known.

Boys entering Leeds Grammar School Lower (Commercial) Department

The admission books for Leeds Grammar School from 1820 to 1900 were edited by Edmund Wilson and published in 1906. The series of registers is almost complete for the period, there being in addition admission registers for the Lower (or Commercial) Department from 1856 to 1865, and lists of boys in the school in 1856, and in the Commercial Department in 1861. The entries are arranged by date or term of admission: a sequential number is given first, then surname, christian name, and, after a dash, father's christian name, occupation, and address; another dash, and then the age of the boy at admission, and often his year of leaving (with the abbreviation r. for 'removed' or 'left'). r.* means left without notice; (o) or S. or Stranger or Foreigner indicates a boy not on the foundation. The editor was unable to divine the meaning of the abbreviation (Q) or the asterisks prefixed to most entries in 1856 to 1860, but dutifully copies them into the text.
