The public school at Uppingham in Rutland was founded by Archdeacon Johnson in 1584. A roll of scholars from 1824 to 1905 was edited by J. P. Graham, and published in 1906. This was a revision and updating of an 1894 edition of the roll, the great bulk of the work having been done by Mrs Mullins. The roll is arranged by year, and within each year by term of entrance, and then alphabetically by surname within each term. Each boy's name is given, surname first, with an asterisk where known (in 1906) to have died. Then there is month and year of birth, father's name (most often just surname and initials) and address (at entrance). Where the boy represented the school at Rugby football (XV) or cricket (XI), that is indicated. Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became judges, &c. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Winners of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes are marked (1) senior, (2) for junior. The Greek letter alpha is affixed to the names of those students who had gained first class results in the Classical Tripos; beta to those entered in the second class; and gamma to those entered in the third class. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Volume 76 of The Law Times, 'The Journal of The Law and The Lawyers', a weekly publication, runs from 3 November 1883 to 26 April 1884. Much of the journal is taken up with law reports, leading articles, &c., and the 'Solicitors' Department' contains several regular features of great interest, including 'Creditors under 22 & 23 Vict. c. 35'. That was a piece of legislation introduced to protect executors and administrators from litigation (whether from kin or from creditors) after the assets of the deceased had been distributed, by allowing the publication of notices stipulating a Last Day of Claim, absolving the estate from later demands. These lists are therefore effectively those of the recently deceased whose affairs were in the process of being wound up; the index covers both the deceased and their solicitors.STAFFURTH. Joseph Foster's Hand-List of Men-at-the-Bar gives a paragraph biography of men who had been called to the bar and were alive in 1885. After the full name (surname first, in capitals) there is a short statement of occupation or practice; a student at which inn of court; when called to the bar; father's name and then address; when born; if married, and, if so, wife's name (and her father's name) is often given. | London Priests (1886)
'The Census of Morning and Evening Attendance in the Churches and Chapels of London, Sunday, October 24th, 1886' was compiled by The British Weekly, employing several thousand persons, and extended to every denomination and sect, giving the number of attendances in the morning (M.) and in the evening (E.), and the name of the incumbent or priest conducting the service. 1500 churches and chapels were found at worship in the city on that day: 'the enumeration was made by actual counting, official estimate being in no case accepted when unconfirmed'. The census covered Kensington, Fulham, Chelsea, St George Hanover Square, Westminster, Marylebone, Hampstead, St Pancras, Islington, Hackney, St Giles, Strand, Holborn, London City, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, St George-in-the-East, Stepney, Mile-end and Poplar in Middlesex; St Saviour Southwark, St Olave Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Camberwell in Surrey; and Greenwich, Lewisham, and Woolwich in Kent. These 29 registration districts comprised a population of about 4,100,000. About half a million attended morning service on that day; 269,799 Anglicans, 142,425 Congregationalists, and relatively smaller numbers for other denominations.

| Boys entering Aldenham School

Aldenham School in Hertfordshire is a public school originating as an Elizabethan grammar school. The Aldenham School Register was first published in 1898, but this tenth edition, by R. J. Evans, and published in 1969, comprised only living old boys who had entered the school from 1900 onwards, together with those who had entered the school before 1900 and who had responded to a questionnaire. There is thus a general presumption that all the boys mentioned were alive in 1969. The boys are listed alphabetically by surname under the term in which they entered the school. Full name is given, in bold, surname first. Then an abbreviation indicating their house (B, Beevor's; K, Kennedy's; M, McGill's; P, Paull's; SH, School House); the period of stay at the school; address as of 1969; father's name, occupation and residence (where the father had also studied at the school, his name is given in capitals with the year of his entry); brief details of any achievements at the school (particularly at sports); and the briefest of details of subsequent career.STAFFURTH. | Medical Practitioners in the Provinces

The Medical Directory was split into several sections. The Provinces section covered all medical practitioners resident in England outside the London postal district (except those in Monmouthsire, who were listed under Wales). Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. The Royal College of Surgeons, established by royal charters, issued this calendar 1 August 1928, including official lists of all its fellows, members, licentiates and diplomates. The register of fellows gives full name (surname first) and address (in italics), with dates of admission as fellow and member. The list of members gives year of admission, full name (surname first) and town or country of residence. The lists of licentiates give year of admission and full name, but no indication of current address: entries of fellows of the college are prefixed with a double dagger, those of members with an asterisk. The lists of diplomates give year of admission and full name (surname first), with those diplomates who were neither members nor fellows of the college indicated with a dagger.
