(1873) Return, “with Christian and Surname of each, of Infants Born in Irish Workhouses, or Admitted thereto when Healthy under Twelve Months Old, and attempted to be Reared therein during the Years 1872 to 1874, showing what has since become of them”. The returns from each poor law union workhouse give: Christian and Surname of Infant Born in the Workhouse, or Admitted Healthy, under Twelve Months; Year; and whether discharged, healthy, in hospital, or dead.

| Outstanding soldiers of the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot
(1870-1875) Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. Both lists are indexed here, and each gives rank, name, regimental number, date of recommendation and date of issue. (The sample scan is from the 32nd foot). | Gordon Highlanders fighting in Egypt
(1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 1st battalion, The Gordon Highlanders, embarked for Malta in 1881; was transferred to Egypt early in 1882, taking part in the 1882 campaign including the battle of Tel-el-Kebir, and in further fighting in 1884. In 1885 the battalion was moved to Malta, and from thence to Ceylon in 1885. This medal roll relates only to the 1882 campaign; it was compiled in Cairo in November 1882 and the medals were issued 30 January 1883.RODDEN. Cost: £8.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

| Soldiers' Balances Unclaimed
(1897) The War Office, under 'The Regimental Debts Act, 1893' compiled and published lists of names of deceased soldiers whose personal estate was held by the Secretary of State for War for distribution amongst the Next of Kin or others entitled. These lists give full name (surname first), rank, regiment, and the amount of the estate unclaimed. During 1897 new lists CCXCI to CCC relating to recent deaths, estates 1896-1897, were issued, as well as republications of lists CCXLI to CCXC from previous years (estates 1891-1896) showing details of balances still remaining unclaimed.

(1939) The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).RODDEN.
